Brazil is the fifth largest country in the world and is the largest country in South America. This South American country has the 7th largest nominal GDP with a population of 190 million. The Brazilian people are known around the world for their passion for sports. All eyes will be on Brazil, especially since they have been selected to host FIFA World Cup and the Olympics. Brazilians love football, martial arts, volleyball, and are very active people. Their passion for sports is undeniable. I first noticed it during 2014 Reveillon and observed how Brazilians young and old welcomed the New Year with non-stop dancing and drinking. I watched a whole family dance non-stop from 9pm until 3am on New Year’s Eve on Ipanema beach. I also noticed many Brazilians riding bikes and running during the hot summer days. Bikes are available for rent around every street corner. Volley ball tournaments seem to be the order of the day at the beach. There are several shops with workout clothes on every block.
There are also a multitude of gyms on the beach and parks. Slack line instructors are also on every beach and park. Despite all of this, I was very surprised to see firsthand how obesity seems to be on the rise with Brazilians. This is an epidemic that seems to be affecting the world with advances in technology and globalization and Brazil is no exception.
There are a surplus of KFCs, McDonald’s, Bob’s Burgers, and numerous street food vendors that are open well past 10 pm in Rio de Janeiro. During my visit to Sambadrome, I counted at least fifteen fried and salty food vendors in addition to the multiple stands selling carbonated and sugary drinks. Each vendor had a long line of customers waiting to be served.
