In this lab the synthesis, purification, and characterization of isoamyl acetate, or banana oil, was determined. The synthesis was completed by a reversible esterification reaction which required the heating of glacial acetic acid and isoamyl alcohol, combined with a sulfuric acid catalyst in hexane. In order to increase the efficiency of the reaction, LeChatelier’s Principle is utilized by removing water from the products. As a result, the reaction as a whole shifts the left producing more isoamyl acetate to try and balance the reaction once again. Once the product was collected, it was purified through means of fractional distillation. Finally to characterize the product, and assess its purity, IR and NMR spectroscopy were taken.…

Depth is defined as the distance between the surface of the river to the bottom (the river bed) this distance is measured in a straight vertical line. As you move from the source to the mouth the river depth increases. (which is shown in the Bradshaw model). This is because at the source the depth is small and shallow due to the river just starting, so theres little water in the river giving it less energy to change the depth of the channel by erosion. As you go downstream the volume/amount of water (also known as discharge) also increases because more and more tributaries join the main river. The increase of water makes the energy levels rise when theres moe energy there is more erosion (in the form of abrasion, attrition and hydraulic action). these types of erosion erode away at the river bed creating a deeper channel.…

A river is the natural course of the water, which goes from a higher point, to the lowest point, usually the sea, ocean, lake or another river. There are few cases where the river simply flows under the ground surface or dries completely before reaching a bigger body of water. The river is also freshwater; there are no rivers with sea water (salty water). Rivers are not always called rivers. Smaller rivers can also be called streams, rills, rivulets and tributaries. Rivers are part of the hydrological cycle. The water inside a river is mainly collected from precipitation (rain) from the drainage basin. The water is also collected from surface runoff, which is caused, by precipitation, groundwater, springs and the melting of natural land (glaciers) and snow. The water in a river is usually confined into a channel and there is usually only one single stream of water within the channel.…
