- A potential threat to U.S. exports because more than 20% of all U.S. exports go to Europe, making it the nation's largest trading partner. About 14% go to the 17 eurozone countries, behind only Canada and Mexico.

- Europe’s effort to replace local national identities with a European idea devoid of nationalism is a serious mistake. Europe’s political project would need a nationalism of its own that was potent enough to give its citizens a sense of shared history as much as of shared destiny.
