We do this with the hopes of achieving improved personal results; however, this does not always see full pervasion as not all people learn or thrive in the same manner. I relate heavily to this as one chain weighing heavy upon my life is my ever-changing desire to be more like those around me. May this be reflected in an intellectual sense or something as simple as how I look, I have endured the trials that come with insecurity. Over the years, a more committed ritual of self love has taught me to identify new aspects of myself that I was not utilizing, such as my ability to teach or my drive to push my intellectual boundaries. Because of these personal discoveries, I began to dream of my own potential success story. I applied to the University of Mount Royal and was later offered admission within two programs: English and Journalism. Pursuing something that would allow me to teach while also keeping with my passion of writing, I decided editing and publishing would be my…

Rodriguez describes himself as a “Scholarship Boy,” obsessed with school and education, and ultimately losing himself as a person. In losing himself as a person he also lost connection with family and a social life. Rodriguez faces a huge tension within his family, which was his view of his parents and teachers. Most normal kids would idolize their parents and aspire to be like them when they grow older. That was not the case for Rodriguez. He was ashamed of his parents and embarrassed of how uneducated they were. Rodriguez describes in the essay his views of his parents through his metaphorical self, “The Scholarship Boy.” He states, “He cannot afford to admire his parents. He permits himself embarrassment at their lack of education.” Rodriguez instead focuses all his adoration and idolization on his teachers, aspiring to be like them and even telling his mother that he planned to become a teacher some day. He describes how he feels about his teachers stating, “I wanted to be like my teachers, to possess their knowledge, to assume their authority, their confidence, even to assume a teacher’s persona.” Rodriguez’s feelings about his parents and teachers contrast with one another. The people that should have a huge impact on his life, his parents, have little to no positive impacts on him, only negative. Due to his disparity to never be like his parents and being ashamed of them, he puts focus into…

In a way of keeping the attention of her audience, she used words that evoke negative emotions and phrases that create images. An example of the imagery she created his through the story she told. She stated, “She tells him to study, but she can’t help him with the content….” (Miller 3). The image she portrays is one of the challenges and vulnerabilities of being an uneducated mother, and the sadden emotions of that mother, that effectively introduce the argument and the serious tone of it. Another feeling Miller reinforces with her word choice is very negative feelings, through the phrases of “dropout’s children,” “the best and brightest,” “gifted and talented” (Miller 6, 11). Miller utilized the phrase “dropout’s children” to make the comparison between the children of higher educated parents to the children of lower educated parents. This demonstrates a division in their abilities and implies a sadden or sympathetic feeling to the audience. Similarly, she utilized the phrases “the best and brightest” and “gifted and talented” to show another division between the children, thru their abilities and skills throughout their education. The positive and hopeful feeling evoked is made through the explanation of success that lower educated parents want their first-generation…

In this essay, Keeping Close to Home, the author, Gloria Watkins, tries to look back at her growing path to find out what influences her values and identity. Most of the sources are conflicting. The first paradox came from her experience attending college in the city. For a girl growing up in a small town, this kept her a far distance, both mental and physical, from her home as a result of moving away from her family. The most direct impact on her is her parent’s ambivalence toward college education. Although they supported her educational endeavors, they were skeptical and confusing about what college education might do to their child, just like what most parents of working-class folks will worry about. This kid of contradictory emotion made her feel confused.…

    Mr Bennett Biography

Bennett. Mrs. Bennett urged the class to go above and beyond and to please Mrs. Bennett was a thing that only happened once in a lifetime. After having her proofread an essay she had assigned, she commended me for my topic, word choice, and use of grammar. “Promise me you’ll write after school,” she had told me. Once those words were uttered out of her mouth my smile would not falter. I began imagining myself as the next Truman Capote and Hunter S. Thompson in a new city writing for a big newspaper. I knew at that time that I did not wish to pursue a career in journalism or writing, but I did believe I had just done the impossible, obtain a compliment from Mrs. Bennett. Besides Mrs. Bennett, I do not believe anyone else has inspired me to write. However, I do have memory of fond assignments given to me in the past, for example: an argumentative essay backed by facts, an analysis of the Communist Manifesto, and a current events essay. In my free time, I enjoy reading and doing an in-depth dissection of books to hopefully understand the thinking of others…

    Diagnostic Essay

My history as a writer began like the opening of any book you could read in the world. To extrapolate, I began my adventure in reading and writing by learning to read from left to right, and from right to left. I feel like through my early learning in Montessori school, and Hebrew school I have gained enough knowledge to pursue the next course in college learning. In my past I learned that reading and writing in different languages is difficult. I learned the numbers in French and I never pursued the French vocabulary flash cards. I was about seven when I began to learn about the French language. I prospered for a while it seemed at Hebrew school. Writing in general was hard as a child, and I only remember that my favorite word in French was “wheat” and my favorite character in Hebrew is Lamhad. I was brought to this class to experience a way of learning that is both personal and comfortable. I am happy to have a professor that cares a lot about his students. The teacher student bond is similar to the mentor deciple bond. They both require patience and humility to begin. The mentor disciple relationship is what encompasses for me, my experiences with background, family, hobbies, interests, jobs, and dreams. The mentor disciple relationship is what I strive to achieve in my life, because I see all things in life have the same relationship.…

I finally hear my name get called after what feels like an eternity of waiting in a small-scaled, dimly lit hallway outside my guidance counselor’s door. I walked into Mrs. Rosario’s tiny office space and sat in a plush black sitting chair and received a, “Hello, how are you?”. I responded, “I am doing exceptionally. Thank you.” Mrs. Rosario then asked if I could hand her my paper, the whole reason I came, so I placed it on the desk in front of her. That paper consisted of all the classes that I wanted to take for my sophomore year. I carefully picked all of them out to ensure my schedule was balanced. With this intention, just one class made me uncertain, Classical Literature Honors.…
