In Cuban I Was A German Shepherd Analysis
My favorite story in the semester was "In Cuba I was a German Shepherd" by Ana Menendez. I loved the story because I can closely relate to it as being an immigrant myself in a country with totally different cultural values. Ana showed a unique way of portraying her characters which really amazed me. All four characters had their own unique stories and life styles who were trying to adjust in their new home with completely different way of life. The topic of the story shows that the main character who was well established and respected in his own country badly missed the recognition and respect he enjoyed back home as he could not mentally align himself with the new facts of life and had to work really hard to survive in his new country. Although

The two stories that I chose for this first assignment were Harrison Bergeron (pg.198-202) written by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.and The Story of an Hour (pg.279-280) written by Kate Chopin. Both stories that I read had 2 very different time periods from each other.…

Out of the three stories that we have read the most engaging in my opinion was ‘The Chosen Vessel". The short story written by Barbra Baynton deals with topics like superstition and religion, showing the deadly outcomes of these themes. These themes first caught my attention as it is something that differentiates for many people depending on when and where you are. I was interested in the religious history of Australia and really liked how Baynton told the story of Australian religious history through her narrative.…

I was most drawn to “Mericans” as the story provokes a gratitude of thought, displays the rawness of cultural diversity through the Mexican church and resonates with the innocence of childhood through the eyes of Micaela. The author, Cisneros, brings to life the full reality of the livelihood of Mexican Americans through this story. In “Mericans” we are offered an opportunity to look inside the family dynamics of a Mexican family and how they are often misunderstood through their custom. We are also afforded the opportunity to visualize a church that plays a cornerstone in their culture. This literary display is why I feel that the story “Mericans” is the best choice for nomination.…

The book I chose was Educating Esme: Diary of a Teacher’s First Year by Esme Raji Codell. I chose this book because I honestly judged it from the title on the book review assignment page and found this to possibly be something that might help me in my journey into becoming a teacher. I found this book to very amusing and very touching. I thought that Esme's attitude and writing style was funny and easy to read and understand. One of my favorite stories in the book is the one when Esme made Billy Williams teach the class for a day because he was misbehaving. Esme threatened suspension to Billy for cursing and being disrespectful, so he accepted the punishment of teaching the class for the day instead of suspension. I thought it was great that he was able to mimic and recite specific lines that Esme used even though he didn’t always seem…

The overwhelming firepower, tactics, and maneuverability from the Field Artillery in the Battle of Palo Alto led to the defeat of the Mexican Army. Maj. Samuel Ringgold developed a carriage mounted 18 pounder siege cannon that was far superior to the Mexican Army’s heavy non-mobile guns (Sanchez, 2017). The Americans also used the 1841 6 pounders which weighed only 650 pounds and was extraordinarily easy to maneuver with oxen and horses ("Steel Cannons," n.d.). The 6 Pounder was also capable of firing three rounds a minute at 1500 feet per second with a maximum effective range of 1000 yards ("Military Factory," 2017). Nevertheless, these weapons were far superior to any of the small arms of time. Many of the small arms used took far too…

How the 13th Amendment changed America, immediately caught my eye of all the topics. It is such a broad topic with so many branches and different ways to write about it. I first began to research what life was life before the amendment was passed by congress. I learned about what life was like from the morning they opened their eyes, and until they went back to their stick homes many laborious…

The most interesting short stories that caught my undivided attention were: “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, and “Jealous Husband Returns in Form of Parrot” by Robert Olen Butler. These stories were both fascinating and intriguing in the sense that they made me feel like if I was the actual character. You could feel the pain and anguish the characters felt, even the desperation. It got to a point that I felt pity for the protagonist whom in both stories where narrating. Here we can see how someone can feel so desperate that they think the only way out is by taking their lives. Both Charlotte Perkins Gilman and Robert Olen Butler created an incredible form of fiction that makes you question if the scenes in the stories can truly happen in reality.…

I have never read a Cuban story before, so when I had seen the title of "In Cuba, I Was a German Shepherd" story, I decided to read it. It's about a small group of Cuban immigrants living in the US after the revolution in Cuba, and how their lives weren't well as in Cuba. Besides to the sense of nostalgia, and the feelings and emotions of the immigrant. I liked this tale even though it's a poignant tale, I was interested and I felt as I am a one of that group, as well as I know very well the meaning of being an exile. I impressed by Máximo's joke about a little dog called Juanito, especially, Juanito's replied to the white poodle: "Here in America, I may be a short, insignificant mutt, but in Cuba, I was a German shepherd."…

The reading selections were all great. My least favorite of all the stories we read was probably “Sonny’s Blues.” The only reason I would change this piece is because Honor’s Students in English 111 with Dr. Faulstick also read it. My favorite of the stories we read was probably Fat Pig or Einstein’s Dreams. I enjoyed Fat Pig because we were able to talk about some serious moral issues that we all face.…
