In Defense Of Polygamy Summary
Polygamy In the article “In Defense of Polygamy”, Aisha Lemu argues that a man should be able to marry multiple women after war times because many women will have no hopes in getting married since the difference in the amount of men to women in the nation will be greatly increased. She also says that most women are more comfortable with sharing their spouse than to have none at all. She states that it is acceptable when the wife is very ill and the husband needs more support from another woman. Polygamy is degrading to women, has a very negative effect on children, and can cause financial problems. Polygamy is wrong in so many ways. Thinking about it, it is considered cheating no matter the reason. If someone loves another person over their spouse, they should file for a divorce with the one they are with currently and marry the one they truly love. Marriage is about being faithful to their significant other under any circumstances. Some people could isolate themselves from the rest of the world because they feel neglected. Losing the trust of the one person they feel they could trust the most in life will definitely make life much more difficult. Women are usually much more emotionally unstable than men. Once they find a man cheating, they become very insecure of themselves. Polygamy is very degrading to women because, while in the act, men are putting women down and making them look like lesser of a person by not respecting them as a woman. Polygamy can make, not only the bride, but the children of the couple very stressed. If a mother is highly upset, she may not have any motivation to do work around the house, such as cooking and cleaning and supporting her kids like a mother is supposed to. This could lead to the point where the children are forced to ultimately fend for themselves whether they can financially support themselves or not. If the children do not have proper parental control over them, they could get themselves into trouble whether it is something small like acting up in school or something huge that causes them to get in trouble with the law. Also, if the parent who is involved with polygamy gets caught by their child, problems will form. For example, if the parent wants to keep the child from saying anything to their spouse, then any form of child abuse could occur. Normally if a person is committing polygamy on their spouse, they believe they have some sort of good reason behind their doings. While in the act, they could start acting differently towards their spouse. A lot of tension would form in the household and lead up to arguments between spouses which would cause a parent to become too harsh on their child and take their pain out on them. Once a spouse is caught, arguments begin and will usually lead up to divorce.
Divorces cause many problems for people too. One major problem is becoming financially unstable. When two people are married, they have roughly twice as much income coming into the household than they would have if they were a single adult. A lot of times, the income put together from both spouses is just enough to support them and a family, if they have one. After a divorce, they lose half of that income and can make it harder to support themselves let alone any possible children. Also, if one is in school and their spouse is supporting them while the spouse, in school, is unemployed and they get a divorce, the person who was enrolled in school is required to pay their ex-husband/wife back the amount of money they spent for school. This will hurt the unemployed partner emotionally and financially
too. Polygamy as a whole is a very negative gesture whether it is being done to women or men. It causes problems emotionally and sometimes physically as well. There should be no reason, at all, to cheat on someone, especially after making promises at the alter to be faithful until death do them part. Innocent children do not deserve to be put in those situations either. Not only can it ruin their childhood, but it could also cause them to follow in their parents footsteps and commit polygamy too.
