LACK OF PARENTAL SUPPORT IN SCHOOLS
Thesis statement
Lack of parental support in school is a major contributing factor to the poor performance of students.
Purpose of Study
To ascertain if there is a direct effect on students’ performance and lack of parental support at school.
Background of the problem
Education has always been a high priority to the country of Belize. In fact the biggest spending done by the Government is on Education. Many initiatives have been made in an effort to improve the performance of students at all levels of education and therefore ways to improve the educational system should always be in the forefront of the minds of policy makers. It is said that the development of any country depends on the development of its young minds through education.
Problem Identified
There are several hurdles faced by educators and by extension the Ministry of Education in accomplishing educational goals and improvements. One such hurdle, among others, is that of lack of parental support in schools, a topic that has been discussed in a number of forums, and yet, very little is done to combat this phenomenon.
Review of Issue
For many years the stakeholders in education in Belize have been debating several issues arising from poor performance in the schools. Year after year the results are said to be dismal and the media and other interest groups look at the Ministry of Education for answers. Last year of the 7359 students who sat the Primary Selection Examination (PSE) only 295 passed with an A some 4%. This shows weakness in the education system as it exists today. Most educators will agree that there is a direct link between the students who performed poorly and the lack of support given to the school by their parents.
