Introduction
For this assignment I will be answering various questions regarding two case studies that I will have read. The case studies that I have chosen are;
• Call center jobs, Once offshored to India, Now offshored from India.
• Liberian Plantation workers allege poor conditions
Case 1 : Call center jobs, once offshored to India, Now offshored from India
1.How, in each case, did globalization change some people’s lives? How did the changes lead to a conflict?
Many western companies opened call centers in India and in 2010 the American Television Network NBC made a weekly show about the phenomenon (United Nations Association, 2014). This opening up of industries and companies in different …show more content…
The workers who worked for Firestone Tire Company were able to receive medical care and their children were able to go to school. They were also protected and received shelter when the Liberian civil war began. This was all provided for by the Firestone Tire Company (United Nations Association, 2014). This conflict between the workers and the tire company forced the workers to file a law suit against the company. The workers said they were mistreated, the company used child labor and the company was also dumping toxic chemicals into the river used by the …show more content…
The law suit was disregarded and the Firestone tire company continued its operations in Liberia. This ruling was not satisfactory to the Liberian workers because they did not get justice and their cry for help was ignored.
3.Can you imagine a way to solve such conflicts in the future, even if rapid globalization continues?
The only way to solve such conflicts, according to me, is for the foreign companies that provide jobs to locals to stop exploitation of its workers and treat them humanely. They should be given good living conditions, health care, education and overall they shouldn’t be underpaid.
Also, International organizations that deal with criminal cases should not be biased and they should give reasonable judgments where those who are in the wrong are punished. In this case study, the courts that handled the law suit were expected to uphold the principles of democracy, human rights and environmental protection but they failed to do so because the company was a US entity that pays millions in taxes and also provides job opportunities for US citizens (The Analyst, 2006).
