In The Future In The Refugees By Viet Thanh Nguyen
“In the future. What do you want to do with yourself?”, as stated in The Refugees by Viet Thanh Nguyen. Many people have been looking forward to the future since they were little and asking themselves the same question. When I was younger, I wanted to be a cowgirl when I grew up. This changed many times, going from a marine biologist to a veterinarian, to a psychologist and everything in between. One thing I knew, I definitely, positively, and under no circumstances would ever be a teacher. Moving on in my life, and now, about seven years latere, here I am, an Early Childhood Studies major. I come from a long line of teachers. My mom was a teacher, my aunt on my dad’s side was a teacher, and all my mom’s aunts are teachers. I did not want to …show more content…
This was when I decided I wanted to work with kids for the rest of my life. I was excited about the idea of shaping kids’ lives. Now, I see working with kids would be such a rewarding job, and I love seeing the work you could do with them to help them grow. I also cannot wait to have kids of my own and watch them grow up in their own unique ways. In order to make sure that I truly wanted to work with kids, I have done my best to find jobs that involved working with children. I was so lucky because my boyfriend’s sister- in- law was a nanny, and she was moving away, so she let me take over her jobs! Also his aunt was a preschool director, so, anytime any of the kids at the preschool needed a babysitter she would give the families my number. I was so fortunate that this happened for me. After hearing from multiple families that I was the only one who got along well with their children, I knew that this was what I wanted to do in the future I am still deciding if I want to work with preschool-aged children, or a little older. In order to find out what I like, I found a job at a preschool! So far, I have been loving it and could truly see myself doing this

I enjoyed being with children so much that my first “real-world” paying job was at a summer camp. Between volunteering at the church Vacation Bible School and working at the summer camp I realized I have a great connection with children and can help make a difference in their lives and that is what I seek to do. I have since been employed at a few different childcare facilities along with a music store and book store but no matter what I always found myself returning to working in either a childcare or school…

In Nguyen’s The Refugees, the title chaptered “Black-eyed women”, the narrator’s encounter with her brother’s ghost brings back the trauma of an identity she has been trying to repress for more than twenty-five years. Her brother ghost has not left because the narrator has not forgotten her trauma of seeing her brother get killed and her traumatic experience of being raped, the narrator states, “I had not forgotten our nameless blue boat and it had not forgotten me, the red eyes painted on either side of its prow having never ceased to stare me down” (14). When her brother visits the second time, she expresses her doubt about why she lived and why he died and he states, “You died too. You just don’t know it” (17).…

I use to think that being a teacher was going to be a short eight hours of teaching and being with children. Having summers off made being a teacher seem a lot more beneficial to. Being a teacher seemed to be the easiest career choice out there for me. After viewing the second grade classroom in Shepherdstown Elementary it is safe to say that I have changed my opinion of teaching. There is unquestionably another side to the world of a teacher that can only be seen inside a classroom. Watching the students made me realize that being a teacher will no doubt carry some difficulties but, it will all pay off in the end. Observing has made me realize that there is more to teaching, the classroom, and what goes on inside.…

Since I was initially a nursing student when I entered college, I had never considered becoming a teacher. Ever since I can remember, I have always wanted a career where I could serve others, and I always believed that being a nurse would allow me to achieve this goal. Still, I fell in love with the education field the moment I started volunteering and aiding in my aunt's classrooms, which they taught grades TK– 4. I immediately changed my major because it makes me feel extremely fortunate to think that one day I would be able to teach, laugh, and help my kids in the same manner that my aunts do. To begin with, I worked as a student intern, as a tutor for the Advancement Via Individual Determination program for four years.…

My name is Crystal Cook. I was born in Collinsville, Oklahoma in 1983. Being in a military family led me to be raised in several states across the country, including Virginia and Missouri, eventually leading to Texas. In elementary school I loved my teachers. They made learning fun and exciting. I knew I wanted to be a teacher when I grew up. As I got older, goals changed and I didn’t pursue that path. I had two wonderful children and felt very strongly that I wanted to be a full time stay at home parent. I focused my time on being as involved as possible in the lives of my own children. This led to hold several positions in the school PTA, lead a Girl Scout troop, teach a Sunday school class and also assist in several sports as Team Mom. The part I loved most about my volunteer experiences was having an impact on not only my children but lives of many others as well.…

I attended Head Start as a student. Three years after graduated from Head Start, my mom began working for them. She started out as a cleaning lady and after a few years moved up the chain to cook and then eventually a teacher. So, since I was about 7 years old I was volunteering. I loved being around the children, the teachers and just the setting in general. When I was old enough, I also began working at Head Start as a teacher’s aide. I later went to work for the University of Idaho Children’s Center, where I figured out that I wanted to work with children as a career.…

When I first started college I was set on working in adoption and foster care. The whole reason I wanted to be a social worker was because of the book A Child Called It. If you have not read the book, it is about a boy named David whose mother abused him in the most unimaginable ways. When the social worker came and removed him from the home I knew that someday I wanted to be able to rescue a kid like David from his home and help him to find a better life. This is why I like the idea of adoption and foster care.…

I first wanted to be a Certified Nursing Assist (CNA) at the age 16. I had to do community service for Graffiti. I was given a job as an activity assistant at a nursing home. I enjoyed it so much! The people there are so much fun to work with. The best part about it was being able to help them read the paper, play bingo, or whatever they wanted to do. Once a lady and her sister were pushing chairs down the hallway and I asked “what are you doing?” They told me they were taking a train ride to see their father for his birthday. It made me feel sad because I had to explain to them that they were going the wrong way, so I helped them back to their room. Once there, I explained to them that they lived here at the nursing home and were not going anywhere. It was at that moment, I wanted to really be in the nursing field to be able to make a positive impression on someone else’s life.…

After I graduated from high school May of 2010, I took some time to think about the career path that I wanted to follow. A couple months after I graduated from high school, I applied for a job at the Early Explorers Head Start in Anamoose, ND. I did not get the job that I applied for but that was okay because the next day I got a call from the School District offering me another job. They offered me the job of the assistant substitute teacher in the Early Explorers classroom. I accepted the job offer and started working in September of 2010. I loved the job so much. There was also something special in the job for me, my baby brother was also in that class. My experiences have been very rewarding so far and have inspired me to want to continue along this path and seek further knowledge in the field. It truly does mean so much to me knowing that I have helped those children learn so many new things in life that will help them with their social and cognitive development.…
