Sound surrounds us at all times. The ring of an alarm clock or the whistle of birds may wake us up in the morning. We hear a variety of sounds, voices, music, noises and traffic. All sounds have something in common. It allows a person to interpret a unique experience of the sound. In other word, imagination is what determines what sound the reader will experience. It is that experience that creates the connection between the writer and the reader. This gives the reader the ability to produce image with place and time. At the same time, poets use words that appeal to the reader senses. A sense of idea or images, touch, hearing, sight, smell, and language allow the reader to be transported to that specific place and time. This enables the

Haiku uses imagination, sounds and senses to create a scene by which the reader can creates their own understating of the poem.
In the Haiku translated by Sam Hamill “At the ancient pond a frog plunges into the sound of water.” The frog plunges into the sound of water rather than into the pond. The poem focuses around the sound that the writer wants the reader to imagine. The absence of a specific sound is what stimulates the reader to create a scene using imagination. The sound made by the frog is left up to the reader’s imagination and based on their experience with things falling into water.
In contrast, in the Haiku translated by Allen Ginsberg “The old pond A frog jumped in, Kerplunk!” this haiku is describing not only that the frog makes a sound but focusing on what kind of sound was created when jumped in. In some way, the reader’s imagination is curtailed. The writer is not allowing the reader to create or imaging a different scene. The writer is telling the reader exactly what kind of sound the frog made.
