The rich lived luxuriously in the cities with their houses built around the central plaza. The plaza was surrounded by temples, offices and homes for priests and nobles. The nobles adorn their homes with shimmering metals and gems. Most nobles occupied themselves by trying to look attractive and pondering ways to please the Sapa Inca. Most commoners spent their days farming and barely spent any time on anything else like eating, bathing, and sleeping.
Children under the age of five had no responsibility and did no housework. Children ages five to nine were expected to help out with small chores around the house. Ages nine to twenty were entitled to take care of and shepherd the city llamas. Younger Inca women gathered herbs,
plants, fruits, and vegetables for their household. After they married they were expected to take care of the family and cook. After age twenty men were given a real job. After age fifty men did non-physical labor such as being a historian, store owner or librarian. After age sixty men only worked if they were able to.
