However, Fischer contains information subconsciously and is unaware of this information that he possesses. It is explained that he cannot remember or reach these memories because of his relationship with his father because he feels as if he was a major disappointment and failure to him. As a result, he cannot give them the information up front. This is where the main plot of the movie unfolds. Cobb is what is called an “extractor”, meaning that he can enter your mind and extract information. It is explained he is very good at it, and some say he was the best. However, he begins to lose his skill as he battles with his own subconscious. Every time he enters someone’s subconscious, his deceased wife, Mal, enters the dream and causes it to collapse. He also begins to lose his ability to tell whether he is dreaming or not. As a result, he is forced to use a device called a totem, which shows him whether or not he is dreaming based on how the object acts. The totem acts as one of the many objects that plays a deep role in the overall symbolism of the movie. It also acts as a visual representation of the situational uses of rhetoric.
