The Increasing Role of English and the Learning of Other Languages
Nowadays, English is popular and important not only in developed countries but also throughout the world. Therefore, some people say that the increasing role of English in the world means that the learning of other languages is being neglected. I do not agree with this statement for the following reasons:

The learning of the other languages is not being neglected. First, let us think about French. Although French is not as common as English, many people want to learn this language. In Vietnam, there are the bilingual classes offered at primary school and high school, such as Luong Dinh Cua Primary School, Collette Junior High School, Le Hong Phong Senior High School. These classes are supported from France, there are lots of scholarships granted to good and excellent students. In some universities like HoChiMinh City University of Education, HoChiMinh City University of Social Sciences and Humanities, about 70 students are studying French. Although this figure is not very high, it proves that many students want to learn this language. Besides, a lot of places also have held activities pertaining to French. In Ho Chi Minh City, IDECAF (Institute for Cultural Exchange with France) is a good place to both learn and practise French. In the world, on March 20, French-speaking countries celebrate the International Francophone Day. On this occasion, people take part in such events and activities as watching French films on TV and some interesting and attractive games requiring the knowledge about France and Francophone community are organized. In some universities, there are also Japanese faculty and Chinese faculty. Although a few of students take courses in these two languages, they are still existing and developing. In Youth's Cultural House in Ho Chi Minh City, there is a Chinese club form with many interesting activities and a lot of members. Nowadays, many people come to the language center to learn these languages as their foreign languages. Moreover, learning the other languages like Orientalism, Russian, German, etc. are developing and are attracted importance. Some people want to come to these countries, so they have to study and when they come there, they will adapt themselves to new life easily. In brief, everybody does not neglect the other languages, they learn English but they learn others also.

English and other languages play the same important role in the world. English is common and important. It is really necessary to know it because you can use this language in every part of the world and the language used in all of computers is English. Actually, 80% of information on the Internet is in English. However, except some English-speaking countries, English is used like the second language. Although be known bountifully, English is used little in the developing countries. Russia is one of the countries that few of people know English. Then, if you want to work or live in Russia, you should learn Russian. More importantly, to know many languages can help you a lot. For example, you are a businessman, you have to travel everywhere, and if you know three or four languages, you are able to communicate with foreigners. Besides, the lack of knowledge of foreign language competence diminishes the capabilities in diplomacy. Farther, in order to have more knowledge about the culture of whatever country, you should know the language the people in that country speak. It will better for you. All in all, any language has different importance and knowing foreign languages is very necessary.

In conclusion, although the role of English increases, learning the other languages is also necessary and important because each language plays its own important role in the country where it is spoken. We can see this through the movement of learning other languages. It is unwise to consider, in a limited period of time, and conclude that it is the so-called unrivalled importance of English. Other languages are not believed to be neglected or paid an appropriate attention to.

Nowadays, all people say that English is the most essential and easiest language that people could use to communicate in different countries. As I read thoroughly the two articles, which are called “ English seen as a Co-star among Global Language” and “Can English be Dethroned”, I’ve found out that people more commonly accept using English as a second language in the 21st century. We all understand the fact that English has been growing in popularity largely as economic globalization is getting bigger. The benefits of English as a common language for communication and interaction far outweigh any possible disadvantages that it might have. English is a global language not because the world shows respect to it by accepting it as a global language because it has the characteristics of a global language.…

It is clear that English language has been widely accepted as the world language because of its large number of speakers in the world. It is obvious that there are significant number of people speaking English as a first language, which has 328 million native speakers (The Ethnologue, 2009).Those can be seen in 112 countries, such as UK, South Africa, New Zealand, and Australia. Furthermore, according to statistics in The Ethnologue(2009), there are approximately 500 million people speaking English as a foreign language. It may because English has been made the official language in 55 countries and 25 territories and even been used in certain international institutions such as The United Nations and IBRD.it may also because of one country’s foreign-language teaching policy that English always have the priority to be taught in schools. As an English major and a bilingual person, it’s hard to jump out of the box and deny the deep, great, far-reaching influence and outspread of English. It seems true that English has become the universal language─the one accredited language to use in professional academic fields, the almost instinctive choice of language for people to speak in foreign countries, remarkably the none-English-speaking ones, and a universally basic personal asset to survive in the modern society. Yet to think of how English obtained its status quo as a world language and the uncertainty of its future, it would be too imprudent to say that English will still definitely be the global language in the future.…

In South East Asia, as a result of English becoming a kind of global currency, there is a large turn towards acquiring language skills not in any language but most specifically in English. As the world becomes more “globalised” or as corners of the planet open up for trade relations with other countries and tourism booms, the need for English increases. Hotels, shops and schools have a desperate desire to sell their services and make a living. People’s ability to survive is strongly linked to their ability to communicate in English. Consequently native languages become redundant and even endangered. People focus on learning English over learning other languages and also in many cases need to use their individual languages to a lesser degree. In fact more Asians speak English than anyone else. This movement has numerous negative repercussions. Language is deeply entrenched in individual culture and thus the growing popularity of English and decreasing need for local language directly impacts on traditions. In Laos, for example, Sou spoken in the Southern part of the country has only around a thousand speakers and is said to be in “peril”. Thus with the growth of English there is a loss of culture and tradition.…

The rise of English as an international language has always been a debatable issue. Its critics condemn the global dominance of English as a form of linguistic imperialism, in which hegemonic powers like Great Britain and the United States extend their influence and interests by promoting the teaching and learning of English (Phillipson, 1992). In contrast, others have observed that the ascension of English as an international language has been supported by individuals in various contexts who appropriate the language as a means to pursue their localized interests and agenda (Canagarajah, 2007). Crystal (1997) explains that there are very many people globally that use English in comparison to other languages which is historical.…
