India's best research universities
The top 50 outstanding ones are state level universities and some of them have severe fund constraints... WHILE Indian Institute of Science (IIS) and AIIMS are the dominant performers in the research output domain, the state universities too have performed very well. In the top 50, nearly half of them are state level universities and some of them have severe fund constraints. But that has not deterred them from publishing well and getting high up on the league tables.

This paper will address and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of university rankings. The paper will first examine what university rankings are, their significance, advantages and disadvantages of attending a higher ranking university or non-high ranking institute, as well as their relation to student performance. According to The Guardian (2013) the world 's top university, by ranking is Harvard University. Third place goes to The University of Cambridge and fourth place to The University of Oxford, both of which are in England. University rankings are monitored and administered by QS (Quacquarelli Symonds). The following aspects are considered in order to rank a university appropriately: Academic peer review (40%), Faculty student ratio (20%), Citations per faculty (20%), Recruiter review (10%) International orientation (10%) and Tuition fees. (QS, 2013) Academic peer review is used to find out how they are perceived by other universities the faculty student ratio is used to determine the commitment of the university to the quality of the students. Citations are used to see how much research is undertaken by the universities, recruiter reviews are used to see how many students are recruited from a specific university, international orientation is used to see how global a university is and fees help determine the market placement of the university.
