- when elders are standing u r not supposed to sit down.
- When elders are sitting in the floor u, u should never sit in a chair because it is disrespectful
-when the elders like parents, teachers, religious leaders come, u should stand up to show respect
- U talk to ur elders in a totally custom in the language. Like, when u talk to elders in Hindi, u always us आप instead of तुम and I think most all the Indian language has that feature added to it.
- U should get the blessing from elders before u leave the house.
- माता-पिता -गुरु -देवा I think that is a sanskrit saying and it gives the sense that u should always consider ur parents and teachers like they are God like ! Because according to Indian culture, knowledge is Goddess Saraswathi and it is considered as holy and anyone who gives knowledge is considered closer to God in the heart ! What a great thought ! I always thought that saying was sweet !
It is also a culture with a lot of rules and customs about how to behave in front of other people. Like I remember when i was like 8 or 9 I crossed my legs and I was sitting in the couch all of a sudden, my uncle made fun of me and told me not to sit like that. When i went home, my asked my mom why ? then she said it is an Indian culture that girls don't cross their legs in front of public. At first i was upset, but .... later I coped up with it.
I love the culture because it gives the most amount of importance to relationships and friendship. Indian culture always pass to the future generation the importance of family. See when I go to India the time goes by soo fast and the reason is because we visit all our relatives in their houses to show our respect and stuff. But the thing is that we have soo many relatives. It is because everyone is soo close to eachother. Like I know my cousins husbands brothers and their family and everyone tries to stay close to each other, so when u have to go visit all of them and there might be a lot of people who are ur relatives, friends, family friends, neighbors etc. Too many people to visit, but when i think about it, it shows how people gives importance to relationships and stuff. Indian culture has the most wonderful feature of treating the neighbors very well despite their religion or class or anything. I remember when I lived in India, we has sooooo many wonderful neighbors who were willing to help us when we needed their help. There was this one guy who lived behind our house who would go and get groceries for us immediately, if we had like immediate visitors. My mom gave food to the neighbors and stuff. During Christmas or easter, we called the neighbor kids over and we all ate lunch together and always gave a share of food to them when it is our birthday and stuff. It was all good. In return they have done soo much for us. We still call our neighbors once in a while. And they are soo nice. We do have a house in India and I for sure know that they watch over the house with our relatives.
I love Indian culture because it has its own rules and customs and believes and everything that is distinct and special. It is rich in cultural arts. The dances that India have are just soo traditional and the martial art stuffs, the instruments that Indian s play are all soo amazing. It is soo rich in culture.
I love Indian culture because even though the rules are a bit tedious sometimes, it always give importance to the respecting elders and keeping the relatives and neighbors closer to heart !!! It is a very wonderful culture that goes back centuries !!
But I have to agree with manchu ! Every culture has something special and Important to offer. Like here in US, there are soo many people of different cultures. We have an international club in our school. Every month we learn about some culture or religion and stuff. It is always fascinating to know about those differences. Like the way Spanish speaking countries celebrate the day of the dead, like the Chinese new year where everyone turns an year older. It is all different and really Good. I admire all the cultures and they all have something good to offer !! And I think I learned to appreciate all of the cultures even though they might be different !

From the ethnogeriatrics curriculum I choose to read American Indian/ Alaska Native Elders module. This module seemed particularly interesting to me because it’s a population that I rarely hear about, especially the older population of American Indians (AI). From what I have learned, culturally American Indians have a great respect for people in old age, so I was curious to know what that looked like and how that conflicted with the strong opposing views in American society.…
