The Indian woman and young girl
Introduction
The Indian woman and the young girl in the two drawings made by John white and De Bry in the 16th century depicts the differences in ideologies of the two artists. John white drew the original image then De Bry expounded on his work and drew a different image which was different from the original image in different ways. He made the latter image more realistic as compared to the john white’s image.
On the water color drawing by john white, the woman’s left foot is in front of the right foot while on the De Bry drawing, the left foot is behind the right foot. This shows that the woman on De Bry image is on motion probably due to the girl’s movement towards her. The …show more content…
DE Bry image tries to depict the social aspect of life where the woman and the girl seemed to be in some kind of a conversation. In the De Bry image the woman is looking at the girl but in the john white drawing, there is no eye contact between the two. The changes in the two images imply that De Bry was more keen on the social aspect and shown that there was an existing relationship between the two people in the image unlike in john whites image where it is shown there is no existing relationship between the two people in the drawing since there is no eye contact and each of them is doing something different from the …show more content…
This shows the evolution of the human nature and change in stylistic views of the human beings between the two time periods in which the drawings were made.
On the water mark drawing, the woman has tattoo marks on her cheeks while on the De Bry image ,the woman had tattoo marks on her calves which implied the evolution of cultural practices between the two time periods in the drawing.
The girl on de bry drawing had a smaller necklace which had two strands with no pendant while the girl on john white drawing had a bigger necklace with three strands and a pendant in it. This also shows that De Bry was keener on the stylistic appearance of the drawing trying to show that a necklace can be worn without a pendant unlike in john white’s image where the necklace and the pendant are worn at the same time.
