What is personality?
Personality is the total pattern of characteristic ways of thinking, feeling and behaving that constitute the individual’s distinctive method of relating to the environment.
Debate about how far the factors of heredity (nature) and environment (nurture) influence personality. There are two main approaches. 1. The nomothetic approach- personality is more or less fixed & various aspects of personality (traits) are the same from individual to individual. Individuals possess selection of these traits, which tend to go together in compatible trait clusters, effectively dividing people into personality types.
2. The ideographic approach-individualizes. Personality develops through interaction with the environment (experience) & in accordance with how the individual sees himself. Personality form therefore be studied only as a picture of a particular individual at a particular time.
