During this placement, I have learned that safeguarding referrals rely on professional judgements against the Risk Threshold Procedures (RTT, 2017) and legislation of Care Act 2014. Assessments methods within adult safeguarding present as both process-focused (clear directives of how to protect vulnerable adults within legislation and policy) and contingent (assessment goals vary on context and independent variables) (SCIE, 2007). The assessment process is systematic and embedded into the Care Act in how local authorities are duty bound to respond and protect adults from abuse (Care Act, 2014). However, despite the process focused approach, there is an element of human subjectivity and the level of need and risk is dependent on gathering the…

I felt sad for Mr. Gill, one of the main reasons being that I have personally been in a MVC myself which brought up the similar feelings, such as anxiety and chronic pain that Mr. Gill expressed. It felt like despite the differences in our age or situation, the pain he was expressing I could relate to directly. Another reason for feeling sadness for him was that he reminded me so much of my own father in appearance and nature. During the session, he referred to me as someone who is like his daughter and that he felt comfortable sharing information with me. I think this moment caused a shift in our therapeutic relationship, in which I felt even more inclined to show him respect and to provide encouragement on his development. The language barriers he faced in getting treatment made me feel angry towards the system. Unfortunately, MVC are common occurrences in our society thus, I imagined that the support systems would have been set in place for survivors to reduce the effects of physical and psychological harms.…

Bradford, I really enjoyed your post as we share the same ideas and seem to have the same experiences with multiple supervisors. I liked how you stated up front that unity of command and unity of direction mean different things and not should not be confused with each other. To me, unity of command is the most important because unity of direction cannot exist without it, especially in criminal justice. Like you said, each officer should only have one direct supervisor that is ultimately responsible for him or her because confusion can arise if there are more than one. I saw this recently at my agency and it really affects the newer officers if the problem is not corrected. I also saw how unity of direction can really work when one…

    Placement Reflective Report

My Placement journey has been one of many mixed emotions. I have found myself at times feeling very frustrated and despondent but on the upside I have been given opportunity to meet and learn from some very skilled and professional youth workers. My Placement began at my current workplace and I had completed 100 hours, but I was finding it hard to separate myself from my worker role to my student role also at times some minor conflict was present between my placement supervisor who was also my work peer when I was there on my normal employment days. At first the dual roles worked fine but soon issues started to arise as I felt when I was in my student role and attending groups my supervisor would undermine me in front of service users who in some instances were my clients. By undertaking my placement in my place of employment often staff and management were confused about the different roles and the boundaries associated with each role. Although I was a student I was also a paid staff member and I often felt some staff expected me to show unreasonable flexibility in work/ student activities. I don’t feel I achived any considerable learning from the 100 hours as it was assumed I already knew how things operated. I also admit as I already knew the requirements I just got on and did what needed to be done and forgot to stand back and observe the different family support workers practice methods. As I entered the placement with pre-conceived notions of “ I knew what was expected of me” I did not set any proper learning objectives or tasks, this compromised my learning greatly.…

As I have been progressing in the Masters of Social Work (MSW) program, I have been able to reflect upon my strengths and weaknesses. Through reflection, I have been able to better understand where I was, where I am, and where I am going as a clinical social worker. Compared with this time last year, I now know that as much as I tried to steer away from policy and research it is impossible to practice on the clinical level without them. While practicing in the agency I was placed at last year, evidence-based practice was a reoccurring phrase that I often heard. My supervisor continued to remind me that in order to do the clinical assessments I wanted to do and provide the interventions I wanted to provide, I needed to know what research showed…
