Individuality VS Conformity

Choices Spenser and I have been friends since the beginning of our lives. My father was dating his sister at the time of my birth, so our families have always known each other. We have been friends longer than I can remember. Of course, everyone makes their own choices. Although, we don’t always realize how our choices effect ourselves and others around us. We were the best of friends until everything started changing. Spenser and I were always active and out doing anything and everything we could think of. Everything from sports to catching cray-fish in the little creek in his back yard. We went together like chips and dip. Our best memories would have to be fishing. We would fish all the time. While we were fishing we could share anything. We could talk all day and fish and no matter how many times we did, it never got old. In high school we added a new friend to the circle; Stephen. Stephen was just like us in every way. He fit in perfectly. Our junior year summer Spenser started heading down a road that most would consider as the ‘wrong’ road. He is really into playing the drums. His father played drums for a band when he was younger so Spenser’s father taught him how to play the drums. Spenser’s desire and passion for music is what I think lead him down this road. Spenser joined a band and he got into bad habits that his band members were into. They were habits I did not want to get myself into.

It started out as just a little experimenting with marijuana here and there. It was just an occasional activity. He tried to pull me and Stephen down that road with him, but we weren’t interested in those kind of activities. As it progressed, Spenser was smoking a lot of marijuana every day. This caused us to drift apart. On the other hand, Stephen and I remained close. Spenser was so concerned with fitting in with his band that he was willing to lose good friends.
