Theres a group in congress that protects the rights of special needs children…..there called the * Council for Exceptional Children which is an international community of educators who are the voice and vision of special and gifted education. Their mission is to improve the quality of life for individuals with exceptionalities and their families …show more content…
through professional excellence and advocacy. CEC represents over 35,000 professionals who work on behalf of children with exceptionalities. * CEC’s main mission is that : every child deserves access to a challenging, motivating, and rigorous education. A high quality education requires superior leadership, full financial support, effective instruction, skilled staff, appropriate programs, suitable facilities, and family and community involvement. This group became more important when the IDEA ACT WAS FORMED.
* What is the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act?
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is a United States federal law that governs how states and public agencies provide early intervention, special education, and related services to children with disabilities. It addresses the educational needs of children with disabilities from birth to age 18 or 21 in cases that involve 14 specified categories of disability. * The IDEA is "spending clause" legislation, meaning that it only applies to those States and their local educational agencies that accept federal funding under the IDEA. Hamilton has title 19 and other federal funding they receive therefore this school is bound to the IDEA Act! So tell me why is it that these kids who are just like me just like you aren’t receiving the help they are supposed to be getting?
This Act strengthens academic expectations and accountability for the nation's 5.8 million children with disabilities and bridges the gap that has too often existed between what children with disabilities learn and what is required in regular curriculum. * PROS OF THE SPECIAL EDUCATION PROGRAM AT HAM HOUSE: - ONE OF THE THINGS HAMILTON HAS DONE RIGHT IS MEETING ONE OF THE IDEA ACTS REQUIREMENTS WHICH IS Students with disabilities should be prepared for further education, employment and independent …show more content…
living.
* Another pro is how the special ed students at Hamilton don’t have to be with just the kids of their class they can see more people who are considered “normal”
* Another pro is that although the program is horrible they still receive some form of education.
* CONS: Cons would be what I said earlier the way they meet the requirement for the idea act of preparing special ed kids for jobs and independent life. . YES THEY HAVE. YOU ALL SEE HOW IN THE LUNCH ROOM THEY HAVE SPECIAL ED KIDS FROM THE NOT SO DISABLED TO THE ONES THAT ARE IN ELECTRIC WHEELCHAIRS PUSHING THE TRASH CANS. THAT’S THERE WAY OF SHOWING THEM INDEPENDENT LIVING AND EMPLOYMENT? BY BEING TREATED LIKE TRASH. WE ARENT ANY BETTER THAN THEM. IN FACT US STUDENTS AND TEACHERS THAT ARENT IN THE SPEC ED PROGRAM ARE MORE THAN ABLE TO GET OUR ASSES UP AND THROW OUT OUR OWN TRASH!
* Another con about the program is how the aids mistreat the students and are in my opinion unfit to be their aids. The teachers are mean and get nasty with the students. For example I see some aids getting angry with the kids and even drag them on the floor or snatch them up by their shirts. We need better supervision and teachers that are more understanding and patient with the
students.
* Another con would be the way the students get treated by other students at Hamilton. We all know our school isn’t at times the safest and we all know that security isn’t great. So tell me why these kids who are in wheel chairs or mentally disabled are walking around alone with no one to watch over them? I believe that the students need to be in an environment where they will feel safe and comfortable because most students who are in the special ed program cant even openly express themselves.
* Also another con is the trouble parents have to go through to check up on their kids I recently spoke to a parent who told me that in order to check up on her child she has to set up an appointment with his teacher to inform her the day she is coming in?
* Another con is how the aids mainly provide help to the students in wheel chairs that are physically disabled when they have more students to care for.
* Another con is they don’t respect the rights the special ed students have. We all have rights as humans and the main purpose of the constitution is to ensure that we are given our rights to not only protect but prevent others from abusing people or abusing the power of authority they have on others.
* MY CONCLUSION AFTER ALL THE THINGS IVE SAID IS WE NEED TO EITHER 1. SHUT THE PROGRAM DOWN AND HAVE THE SPECIAL ED KIDS IN A SCHOOL ESPECIALLY FOR THEM OR 2. REFORM THE SPECIAL ED PROGRAM AT HAM HOUSE TO MAKE IT A BETTER AND SAFER PLACE FOR THESE STUDENTS AND PROVIDE AIDS THAT ARE MORE SPECIALIZED IN HELPING THEM. *
