Industralization
Though industrialization had many positive repercussions, it brought forth a great deal of misfortune. The world found itself subject to many conflicts it had never faced before. Not only was poor sanitary a big consequence of the Industrial Revolution, poverty was as well. Edwin Chadwick and Jack London went on to talk about why poverty had such a big effect on industrialization. It is known that workers in factories during the late 19th and early 20th centuries were severely mistreated; they were not granted the pay they should have received. It has been said that the society built places around factories for housing due to the many workers that worked in the factories. Edwin Chadwick broached this topic in his work Inquiry into the Sanitary Conditions of the Poor. He made it clear that people in the community had no fresh water. It was quite easy for deadly diseases to spread due to the congested living conditions factory workers were forced to accept. Diseases, not so surprisingly, increased the mortality rate in these urban areas. Chadwick emphasized that people living in these slums were subject to apathy from their governments. He suggested that precautions should be taken in order to assure that these people were given a real chance to survive. (Caldwell, 404-407). The poor were completely overlooked in urbanized societies. It seemed as if the gap between the rich and poor was growing drastically. There was no apparent middle class. The rich factory owners could pay their workers whatever they wanted. There would be no one to stand up for them. If the workers decided to ask for a pay raise, the owners could simply fire them. There was a plethora of people to fill in the empty spot. In Jack London’s essay The People of the Abyss, he touches on the subject of poverty as well. He emphasizes the term “ghetto” when speaking of the tenements workers and their families resided in. He stated that the ghetto is where the rich and powerful do not exist. The ghetto

The Gilded Era, a term coined by author Mark Twain, is named for the years between 1865 and 1900 when the United States experienced a nation wide industralization. America once was a nation of agriculture, however with the introduction of the railroads and steel industries, more and more citizens were urbanizing into major cities for the oppertunities they held. This occcurance dramatically altered the demographics of the U.S., socially and economically, with more emphasis put on factory made goods, rather than rural farm products. Farmers as well as industrial workers both experienced problems during this period, which prompted organizations, like labor unions, to form, as well as strikes and boycotts to occur.…
