One does not necessarily expect books about food also to be about bigger ideas like oppression, spirituality, and freedom, yet Pollan defies expectations. Pollan begins with an exploration of the food-production system from which the vast majority of American meals are derived. This industrial food chain is mainly based on corn, whether it is eaten directly, fed to livestock, or processed into chemicals such as glucose and ethanol. Pollan discusses how the humble corn plant came to dominate the American diet through a combination of biological, cultural, and political factors. The role of petroleum in the cultivation and transportation the American food supply is also discussed. A fast-food meal is used to illustrate the end result of the industrial food chain.…

Mankind is poisoning the planet. Today, enough fossil fuels have been burned and enough forests have been chopped down to increase the highest concentration of carbon dioxide than any point in the past eight hundred millenniums. (528) In the article “The Acid Sea,” Elizabeth Kolbert wrote about how the polluted sea around Castello Aragonese provides us with a glimpse of our future oceans and how it interferes with the chemistry of the ocean. In the article “Our Oceans are Turning into Plastic … are You?,” Susan Casey discusses the negative effects plastic has on the environment. “The Acid Sea” and “Our Oceans are Turning into Plastic … are You?” did an excellent job with providing strong arguments and appeals to inform and persuade the reader that the world is deteriorating and reform is compulsory for the health of the planet.…

Often times, there are debates surrounding controversial environmental issues, such as global warming, deforestation and nuclear power. But then, there is little or no public debate on the impact of plastic bags on the environment. Plastic bags kill tens of thousands of animals every year. In the marine environment plastic bag litter is lethal, killing tens of thousands of birds, whales, seals and turtles every year as they often mistake plastic bags for food such as jellyfish (planetark, 2015). Various experts estimate that up to a million birds and 100,000 marine mammals are killed each year from plastic debris including bags (One Green Planet, 2015). It is estimated that between 500 billion and one trillion plastic bags are used worldwide each year ( One Green Planet, 2015). This means that plastic bags is serious environmental issue. Given this, we as sustainability leaders should start to think of a way to trigger some public debate on this issue. Sustainability is about…

According to Ray Kroc,” McDonald’s had a system of simplicity and effectiveness.” Kroc began to experiment theories to discover what made this outstanding system complete. McDonald’s went from receiving whole buns in boxes, to receiving cut buns in reusable boxes to minimize the effort of the employees. It used wax paper to separate the patties so that when the employees were ready to cook, they would just slide the patty off directly into the grill. Its short and simple menu saved the time along with paying right then and there. The tables were set next to trash cans so that it was easy to just get up, throw your trash, and leave (Ray Kroc 1977 pg. 96-97)…

Imagine one thousand years in the future. The majority of the human population has died out due to unsustainable methods of resource use. All this is in the ancient past, but still, one thing remains: plastic. As the waves roll upon the beach, they hold within their grasp plastic wrappers, containers, but most of all bags. They drift in the wind over America’s great prairies and are caught on rocks at the highest peaks. Animals are seen wrapped in plastic struggling to move and breathe while others lie motionless on the ground having given up the struggle to free themselves. Society’s descendents can no longer lie on the beach and enjoy the sun due to the thick layer of plastic covering the sand on the Earth’s beaches. Now think about this: is it worth it? The negative effects of the use of thin plastic bags outweigh the positive benefits.…
