DBQ: The Industrial Revolution: Effects
In the late 1700s, The Industrial Revolution began in England, which had an immense range of negative and positive effects on the social and also economic life of the people in England. The results have been looked at form many different point of views, including the factory workers themselves, the factory owners, the government, and others who looked upon the conditions in the industrial cities at the time. This essay will evaluate the positive and negative effects of the Industrial Revolution.
The Industrial Revolution brought on mostly negative effects, but there were some positive, as some people thought. that the conditions were good, when in reality they weren’t. Also, the excerpt that was published in 1831 (document 4), it states that there was an infinite number of comforts and conveniences, clothes were cheaper, and travel is cheaper and even quicker than before. Part of this is true, travel was faster and cheaper, which cause a global migration, but when it stated that there were an infinite number of conveniences, it was deceitful. However, a truthful, positive effect was that iron production increased over the years (1740-1900) (document 4), which gave people a new material to make products out of.
There were mostly negative effects from the Industrial Revolution.
There were unhealthy conditions and air pollution from all the factories. Also, there were unfair and unsafe conditions in factories, which resulted in people having medical problems. For example, in document 1, someone is interviewing a worker from a factory. The worker exclaims that he began working at the age of 10; he worked from five in the morning to nine at night and had one period of 40 minutes in the 16 hours at noon for a meal. Also, he wasn’t educated and could only read, but not write. More examples of bad factory conditions are in document 2, where another factory worker was interviewed about their experience in the factories. The man has damaged lungs, improper leg muscles, and he would die in a year. His doctor says it was caused by dust in the factories, overworking, and an insufficient diet. His brother died from a bad cut from a machine and of infection. The worker also stated that he knows that nearly a dozen children died during the two and a half years that he worked there. These examples show that there were many negative effects of the Industrial
Revolution.

People put out false information, so nothing would change because they thought it was alright the way it was. But, in the end, the Industrial Revolution changed history forever.
