Industrial Revolution
The industrial revolution was a change in society.Population increased due to the fact that the factory system experienced a growth.The city screws to fast and cost government regulation which caused overcrowding poor water quality and poor sanitation. During this time, there were no age restrictions and people as young as six could work. There were no safety regulations and of pollution which caused unsafe working conditions The working class was very poor and vastly affected by these conditions. They would work off as long as 12 hours and they lived far. The industrial revolution had a negative short-term effect on the working class due to unsafe work conditions and child abuse.
These unsafe work conditions demonstrate
the negative effect of the industrial revolution on the working class.For example, in chapters in the life of a Dundee factory boy, James stated “...I was seized with the strong, heavy sickness, that few escape on first becoming factory workers.The cost of the sickness, which is known by the name of ‘Mill fever’, is the contaminated atmosphere produced by so many breathing in a confined space, together the heat and exhalations of grease and oil and the gas needed to light the establishment.” The statement shows that the working class worked long hours and had low-wages to get any medical attention. This is a clear example of unsafe work conditions because of the toxic fumes they were breathing in. Additionally, another example of unsafe work conditions can be seen in a testimony by Dr. Michael Ward where he testifies “when I was a surgeon in the infirmary, accidents were often admitted to the infirmary, though the children's hands and arms have been caught in the machinery; in many instances the muscle, and the skin is stripped it down to the bone, and in some instances a finger might be lost.” Furthermore, this reveals that there were children who were underage who were part of the working class.This shows that the children suffered brutal injuries due to the unsafe work conditions.Finally, in the conditions of the working class of England Frederick Engels states,”...The pork-raisers rent the courtyards and build pig pens in them...The atmosphere of these Courtyards is utterly corrupted by putrefying animal and vegetable substances.”This evidence portrays that the working class was a very low class and very poor.This statement demonstrates an industrial revolution created a negative effect because of the low wages.
