FIERY DAY: The packaging unit at Ambattur Industrial Estate where a fire broke out on Sunday.
CHENNAI: A major fire in a printing and packaging unit at Ambattur Industrial Estate was put out after nearly three hours on Sunday morning.
According to fire and rescue service personnel, the fire broke out at the unit on 2nd Main Road after a live high tension wire running over it was severed and fell on the road, reportedly causing a short circuit.
Following the call received around 8.45 a.m., ten fire tenders, including two foam tenders, were sent to fight the fire. About 60 fire and rescue service personnel battled hard till 11.30 a.m. to douse the flames.
According to the Divisional Fire Officer V.Vijaykumar, who supervised the operations, apart from water, the fire and rescue service personnel used sand and foam to put out the fire. “We also ensured that the fire didn’t spread to the diesel bunk situated nearby”, he said.
Though several inflammable and raw materials were gutted, the accident did not result in any casualty since it was a holiday for the unit.
Traffic on the road was disrupted for about four hours until the severed high tension wire was fixed. Members of the Ambattur Industrial Estate Manufacturers’ Association complained that about inadequate foam stored in the nearby fire stations to douse such fire accidents in the estate.
Such fire accidents also underline the need for fire safety equipment in the industrial units. The Ambattur municipal chairman K.N.Sekar and Ambattur Tahsildar Padmaja Devi visited the accident spot.
The total loss was not known immediately. The police are investigating.
