REPORT ON INDUSTRIAL VISIT

Mother Dairy
Ltd.
Patparganj, New Delhi
Our visit to Mother dairy in patparganj was a good experience. Mother dairy is one of the biggest milk industries in India providing the customers with world class quality of milk and milk products. This industry gave us some of the important knowledge of the industry culture . According to my personal view about the learnings that I got to know that.. Mother dairy Delhi was set up in 1974 under the Operation Flood Programme, awhollyowned subsidy of the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), whose current chairman is Dr. Amrita Patel. Currently, it is one of the largest milk (liquid/unprocessed)plants in Asia selling more than 25 lakh litres of milk per day, thereby enjoying a market share of 66% of the branded milk sales in Delhi. Mother dairy ice- cream was launched in the year 1995 and has shown continuous growth over the years, and today it boasts approximately 62% market share in Delhi and NCR. Also came to know about the interesting fact that mother dairy and amul are the only two ice cream brands present, all others are not real ice cream form. To ensure this Mother Dairy operates such that the farmer gets 85% of the total cost of sales. Mother Dairy is an IS/ISO 9002, IS 15000 HACCP and IS 14001 EMS certified organization. Moreover, its Quality Assurance Laboratory is certified by National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratory (NABL)-Department of Science and Technology, Government of India The most important observation during the visit was the hygiene factor present there. The premises and the plant area was clean, the employees have the orders not to touch milk with bare hands and they get their machines and silos cleaned every weekend to ensure that the milk produced is safe for the customers. Moreover, they have a specific TPM (Total Productive Maintenance) policy for everything like for distribution, energy conservation, environment etc. and KAIZEN policy for all the employees which they have to follow. They have these policies as strict code of conduct as they are manufacturing milk which requires purity and hygiene and to give the best to the customers the company needs to do this. That is why their policies can be seen at most of the places in the premises. PRODUCTS :- Mother Dairy's range of products include the brands :
· Mother Dairy (milk, milk products, curd, ice cream, butter etc.)
· Dhara (range of edible oil) &
· Safal (range of fresh fruits and vegetables, frozen vegetables, fruit juices) Milk Procurement: - Mother Dairy sources its requirement of liquid milk from dairy co-operatives and producer institutions. Milk is received from farmer cooperatives through insulated road/rail tankers at very low temperature in order to retain its freshness.

Milk distribution: -79 tankers in the morning and 75 tankers in the evening bring in milk from the regional collection centres. After collection the same tankers are utilized for the delivery of the processed milk to the vendors and outlets. Mother Dairy has over 820 Milk Distribution Outlets in the National Capital Region. Each of these outlets place their demand by raising an invoice one day in advance. In order to satisfy immediate demand, 20 to 25tankers are provided with a buffer stock of 500 litres each day so that they can bemobilized to cater the demand in an area. To coordinate its operations all the tankers are equipped with HAM radios.

Mother Dairy Foods Processing Ltd, also known as Mother Dairy Fruit & Vegetable Private Limited, Patparganj, Delhi, has a turnover of about $500 million. Mother Dairy’s turnover has been growing at the rate of 20% (CAGR) over the last 3 years

Dairy has emerged recently as an important sub-sector in agriculture with profound implications for human health, livelihoods and the environment. Milk production in Bangladesh has increased during the past two decades. Improvement of high yielding crossbreed dairy and veterinary facility are the cogent factors for this partial success. But it is still far to achieve self-sufficiency in milk production. In order to head for self-sufficiency, issues on demand for milk are also becoming important. Although the declining rate of population growth has contributed partially towards self-sufficiency but the factors like urbanization and substitution have created the increasing demand for milk. Milk production in Bangladesh has increased at a rate (2.8 per cent) slightly higher than population growth (2.2 per cent) during the period from 1984 to 1996. Total supply of milk increased even slower than production because of elimination of imports with the growth in production.…

    Dairy Industry in Pakistan

Milk and its products provide nearly one third of world’s intake of animal protein (FAO, 1998). Milk and milk products represent 27% of total household expenditures on food items in Pakistan. Per capita availability of milk in Pakistan is 82.4 kg per annum. About 80 thousand tons of dry milk, worth rupees 1213.5 million, was imported to Pakistan during 1999-2000 to meet local demands of milk. Small herd, poor genetic potential of animals for milk, low quality feeds, high risks of epidemics, improper marketing channels, lack of technical man power for dairy industry, high environmental stress, reproductive failure and high udder abnormalities, lack of commercial rations, orthodox management practices and poor extension services are the major constraints of dairy sector in Pakistan. The buffalo is the main dairy animal in Pakistan that accounts for roughly 75% of all milk produced in the country. The milk production in excess during winter and less during summer months causes many problems in its marketing. Pacca dodhis (milk suppliers) supply their milk to collection center or milk shops, usually after decreaming. Peri urban milk producers usually sell their product directly to consumers, milk shops and to larger establishments through contracts. If the pacca dodhis sell their milk to decreamer or hire his services, the milk is separated into cream and skim milk. The skim milk is mixed with other whole milk and sold to urban milk shops. The producer appears not to receive a premium for summer milk or for milk with higher milk fat content except for that paid by the milk collection centers that are operated by processors. The milk products and…
