Housing for the working class families was very tough to find. They either had to buy a house somewhat far from the city causing transportation complications. Or they could rent a room in a very crowded boarding house. Also as working-class families left the central city, immigrants began to arrive and take their place. But there were a lot more immigrants than there were working-class families causing the already crowded apartments to become even more crowded. Sanitation was also a problem many came face-to-face with. As the cities grew so did the struggle of keeping everything clean. On the streets animal's feces built up, sewers overflowed with foul smells, and factories polluted the air entirely with smoke. People continuously dumped their garbage into the streets because there was no trash collection. As the cities grew in population so did the demand for water. Because early urbanization lacked sanitation it caused the water to become so dirty it was almost unhealthy to drink. For a long period of time, citizens had to take pails out to outdoor faucets to simply get water for a bath. Once plumbing did come along in homes it was grossly inadequate piped water, which carried diseases like cholera and typhoid fever. The negative situations that Urbanization caused could almost outway the positives.
