How To Prepare Infant Formula

Infant formula is an alternative to breast milk. It comes in three forms:

Powder.

Concentrated liquid.

Ready-to-eat.

BEFORE PREPARING FORMULA:

Check the formula's expiration date. Do not use formula that is expired.

Check the formula's label to see if you will need to add water to the formula. If you do need to add water and if you are going to use well water or bottled water, boil the water for at least 1 minute. Then let it cool.

Make sure you know just how much formula the baby should get at each feeding.

Make sure that everything used to prepare the formula is as clean as possible. To do this:

Before preparing the formula milk I always clean all the work tops and wash my hands. The bottles, teats and brushes are all thoroughly cleaned and sterilised to prevent the risk of the child getting sick or diarrhoea. In my setting I would always make the formula milk up fresh for each feed and if any formula milk is left then I would always throw it away. This will also prevent the baby from becoming ill. If you are unable to make up formula milk fresh then you can use ready to use liquid formula or fill a hot flask with hot water (at least 70⁰C) and the formula can be made up when needed.…

If the baby is still crying, that often means that the baby is hungry. So you will have to find the bottle and heat up the milk that the mother has told you to use. Remember, use one scoop of formula for every two ounces. Shake well. Then heat. Do not heat a bottle up in a microwave--microwaves can cause pockets of scalding hot milk. Place the bottle in a pot on the stove and heat the water. After heating up the bottle, make sure the bottle cap is securely fastened and shake the bottle well. Then squirt some of the milk onto the meat of your wrist and if the milk is too hot, continue to shake the bottle until the milk isn't too hot anymore. Once the milk is ready for the baby to drink, prop the baby up and gently stick the rubber nipple into the baby's mouth. Do not…
