This article touches on the specific tools the Federal Reserve has in its arsenal to help achieve its goals. These being to maximize employment and keep inflation stable. The government has the power to influence the countries economy by using monetary and fiscal policies (both course concepts). These two tools, if used carefully, have proved to be useful during the recent recession. They have helped stop the free fall of the economy, but it is still far from its…

The establishment of the Federal Reserve System demolished the financial crisis that sunk the economy of United States of America in 1907. As described by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, Central to America’s Economy, “A particularly severe panic in 1907 resulted in bank runs that wreaked havoc on the fragile banking system and ultimately led Congress in 1913 to write the Federal Reserve Act.” The System that, at first was established to stabilize the panic crisis; now holds a larger responsibility of stabilizing the employment rate. The employment rate is influence by the Federal Reserve System as evident by the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, “...monetary policy influences inflation and the economy-wide demand for goods and services—and, therefore, the demand for the employees who produce those goods and services--...” This illustrates how the Federal Reserve System influences employment rate. As a policy under the Federal Reserve System inflates the demand of goods and services, the employers producing the goods and services seek for more employees. Hence, the inflation of the demand of goods and services directly relates to the inflation of the employees, which stabilizes as well as maximizes the employment rate in United…

As prices for goods and services that we consume increase, inflation is the result. The inflation rate is used to measure the rate of change in the overall price level of goods and services that we typically consume. While inflation is a regular annual occurrence in modern economic systems, it only becomes a policy concern when reaching unacceptably high levels. As long as we properly anticipate inflation, we can prepare and absorb much of its shock. Problems occur when inflation is greater than we predicted, when it is unanticipated. We can conclude that inflation may cause many economic distortions, including slower growth and higher unemployment. Many policymakers advocate attempting to sustain the lowest possible rate of inflation. One way of maintaining the economy is by setting a minimum wage. Increasing a minimum wage would have many side effects on the overall economy, so economists discourage raising the minimum wage in order to keep inflation down and thereby encouraging economic growth. Economic growth explains the expansion of an economy's capability to produce goods and services, and is usually accompanied by higher…

In 1958, the economist A. W. Phillips made prevalent the idea that there is heavy correlation between inflation and unemployment. Economists began to widely accept the concept that high inflation is correlated with low unemployment and low inflation is correlated with high unemployment, until Friedman pointed out that high inflation is only a temporary remedy to high unemployment; the employment rate may decrease for a while, but in the long run, it will rise and inflation will also remain high. This theory was developed through the application of the rational decision making of the Economic Man and was tested and proven true by the period of high inflation in the 1970’s…

There is a clear link between interest rates and unemployment. It can be seen on a historical chart of civilian unemployment rate and the 3-Month T-Bill interest rate. According to Figure 1-1, we can easily find out that a larger-than-expected monthly increase in unemployment rate is considered inflationary causing interest rates to fall while the decrease in unemployment rate will cause interest rates to rise. As a result, we hypothesize that there is a negative linear relationship between interest rates and unemployment.…

The definition of full employment is critical, because as unemployment rates reach and fall below this level, inflationary pressures start to build. The further that the unemployment rate falls below the natural rate, the greater the pressure on inflation. This is a result of modern production methods. Even in a capital-favoring production country like the United States, worker wages represent over 70% of all production costs. Rising wages increase costs, which are usually passed on to consumers as price increases, leading to climbing inflation.…

Economists say that inflation refers to as a continual rise in the general level of prices. An increase in the general level of prices for goods and services will cause a decrease in the purchasing power of the currency. While inflation is defined as an increase in the level of prices, not all of these prices necessarily change by the same proportion or even in the same direction. FIND AN EXAMPLE Because of this, inflation affects the distribution of real income and wealth among individuals and households.…

Conflicting Goals in Economic Growth Goals of monetary policy are to "promote maximum employment, inflation (stabilizing prices), and economic growth. " If economists believe it's possible to achieve all the goals at once, the goals are inconsistent. There are limitations to monetary policy. The term "maximum employment" means that we should try to hold the unemployment rate as low as possible without pushing it below what economists call the natural rate or the full- employment rate.…

In the major industrial countries, low unemployment usually creates inflationary pressures. But during the recent economic expansion in the United States, prices have held steady despite low unemployment. Inflation is generally defined as an upward directional increase in the average of prices. Most people tend to be concerned about it because it reduces the purchasing power of the income earned by households. Though a few exceptions most commodities accentuate to this general assumption, all other things being equal. On the contrary the job market is a database of positions available for either a specific profession or the pool of potential applicants nation wide.
