Shawn et al Health risk and Society 2010 This study analyzed new media content to examine the role played by celebrity drug use in young people’s perceptions of drug use.1 The study focused on drug abuse and investigates new media coverage of celerity drug abuse and how these stories were affected young people. They used focus groups with young people asking them different questions about these topics. They took into consideration that negative role models in media put young people at greater risk to engage in drug use. The International Narcotics Control Board has stated that celebrity drug offenders influence public attitude and their actions taken toward drug abuse especially in young people. The fear is that young people will model the behaviors of celebrity drug offenders and this will lead them to a life of taking risks such as drug abuse. This is evident in the appeal and popularity of Amy Winehouse. Although Winehouse was eccentric and had many reports of prosecution and rehabilitation for drug use she was voted the “ultimate heroine”. In total there were 4 focus group totaling twenty young people.
