The Impact on Local Health
Influenza is a communicable disease impacting Idahoans every year. The United States experiences a seasonal influenza incidence each year. This recurrent period is known as “flu season”. Most commonly, flu does not cause serious health issues, however, serious complications can and do occur. The young, elderly, and patients with multiple chronic medical issues are at highest risk for severe flu complications.
There are 3 types of influenza - A, B, and C. “Influenza A causes local epidemics and worldwide pandemics, influenza B does cause disease but does not cause epidemics and influenza C seldom causes disease in human beings (Macha &McDonough, 2002, p.298-299). The word “influenza” or “flu” refers to influenza A and B when referenced in general terms. “Individuals infected with influenza virus generally preset with upper respiratory tract signs and symptoms such as sneezing and coughing and constitutional symptoms including fever, muscle aches, and fatigue.” (Macha &McDonough, 2002).

The young, elderly, and patients with multiple chronic medical issues are at highest risk for severe flu complications. Implications on one’s health can vary from mild to as severe as death and the negative impact on healthcare costs and use of resources is concerning. There are several actions one can take to help prevent contracting influenza including vaccines, handwashing, and covering of nose/mouth when sneezing and coughing.
