Informal Classroom Base Assessment
The assessment that I would use if I were an ESL teacher would be informal classroom base assessment. This informal assessment will help me decide:
• How to plan future instruction so that student needs are met
• How students should be grouped for instruction so that each student receives instruction at the right level of difficulty
• If instruction is being delivered at the right pace
• Which students need individual support One of the problems that I have seen in ESL students struggling with is connecting the spoken language with the writing. In order to make connection with the concept of speaking and writing, I would introduce the concept of print by introducing a new book that we have not read. I discuss how prints carries meaning,

I would stop during my reading to emphasize on mood, and feelings of the character in the story. After the reading, I would ask the student to write the words I have written on the board. I would write the words again with them by saying out loud the letters in the word being written. Assessment The next day, to see if the students have learned from the introduction. I would give the students a copy of the book and ask assessment questions like: “Can anyone show me a letter? A word? A sentence? The title? The end of the sentence (punctuation mark), the back and front of the book? I would read the story again and model the student to follow me as I read. At the end of the story we would discuss, what happen? Who were the characters, and which part of the story you like? The students would make their own five-page book on answering the questions about the story. Students are allowed to illustrate and make their book their own expression of their

After reading, I would ask questions to reinforce the main idea of the story. I would ask that if horsefly and honeybee did not work together to fly away do they think the bullfrog would have ate them and why. I would also ask why did horsefly and honey bee shared the flower at the end of the story but fought for it in the beginning. This would make the students think about what happened in the story that made horsefly and honeybee realize that sharing and teamwork is…

A simple felt story board after reading a story can help them understand it better, have the children take turns, ask open-ended questions, have them draw a picture. These simple steps will help each individual understand the story.…

As looking through Box 4.7 in my textbook, I came to what for me would be the most useful research-based practice is developing reading skills and strategies in children. If a child does not possess any good reading skills, this child will not want to read. Developing these literacy skills will help them to achieve their reading goals. I believe all four of the shared reading strategies are extremely important to use in a classroom for a child’s reading success. As a teacher, I would use all four of them. But if I had to pick one I would introduce, talk about, and read a new story. As our book says, “there is no better way to create a love for books in children of all ages than by reading aloud” (Vecca, Page 127). This will also help them appreciate literature more “and build absolute strong concepts about reading and writing” (Vecca, Page 127). I work in an elementary school; I know how important it is to read aloud to children and on a daily basis. It helps to build their imagination and develop their own ideas and even begin developing their critical thinking skills. I also believe that it gets children involved with the book, especially young children. I believe to develop a love for reading, in turn to benefiting the student in the long run. Asking them before beginning the story, what do you think this story is about? Proceed to ask questions about the story during and after is another way to get them involved in the reading. If they know that questions are coming, this may get them to pay attention during the story more often..…

I would generally use whole-group instruction at the beginning of a lesson. This allows me to give the students a pre assessment on their knowledge on the subject. New information being introduced to the class should always be given in a whole group setting so as not to give any students a disadvantage of succeeding. By showing the whole class new concepts at the same time, it allows me to figure out what kind of flexible groupings I will need to implement.…

When I first volunteered in school I did one to one support with reading to junior children. To begin with I would only ask the children to tell me the title of the book, read the passage on the back cover and make their mind up if it was a story or factual. While reading I would encourage them to sound the words out themselves.…

As future teachers it is very important to make sure that our students understand print. There are students who are fully able to pronounce print but unfortunately aren’t able to comprehend what they are reading. To read I believe means to understand the meaning of words, so therefore it involves much more than pronouncing print. In Beyond Traditional Phonics, (BTP) Margaret Moustafa stated, “pronouncing print is not necessarily comprehending print” pg. 6. Unfortunately, there are many students who are able to pronounce print but are not able to understand the meaning of what they read. Children use many different cueing systems to figure out print. Besides the three cuing systems which I will explain more throughout the essay is the concept of phonics and phonemic awareness.…

Aims: The aim of this assignment is to demonstrate and plan a story to read to a group of children aged 2 and half to 4. I chose this age group because this is the group I work with on a daily bases from 9:30 to 12:30 five days a week. I am picking a story called “Oh Dear” by Rod Campbell who is a Scottish writer and illustrator of several popular children's books including the classic lift-the-flap board book “Dear Zoo”. As it is a story that helps the children with learning the different animals on the farm and also encourages the children to use their imaginations as they lift up the different flaps in the book to see what is behind them. Which Maria Montessori says “Imaginative teaching materials are the heart of the process”. All of Rod Campbell’s “books have simple text often with repeating phrases which is ideal for pre-readers” and will also Help the children with langue and intellectual skills. “The child proceeds at his own pace in an environment controlled to provide means of learning” -Maria Montessori. this book also helps the children physically as they have to get up to lift up the flaps on the book “movement is therefore the essential of life education cannot be conceived of ad a means to moderate or worse to inhibit movement; it should only function as an aid to a better expenditure of energy whilst allowing it to develop normally” -Maria Montessori pg 102 discovery of a child. “The aim of the children who persevere in their work with an object is certainly not to “learn”; they are drawn to it by the needs of their inner life, which must be recognized and developed by its means.” – Maria Montessori pg 120 discovery of a child. To develop their attention spans…
