No leaders do not always have a position of power. Although being a nurse in its self holds a great deal of power and immense responsibility. Impacting lives in ways that we cannot imagine. An informal leader is someone on the nursing unit that is perceived as someone who pays attention, follows policies and informs others; leading others in a successful way by motivation, encouragement and example. This person does not hold an official position of power. These are individuals that are respected by the group, have confidence in their work, trust others on the team and have good communication skills, verbal and nonverbal. They give others respect and evoke confidence in order to promote a better team atmosphere. Some informal leaders that I have seen at my work place are nurses that work by my side on a daily basis, PCT's that influence me and suggest interventions, and the patients family members have stepped up and become a great voice in leading the care for the patient. Even I at times have took the position of leader in the group of nurses and PCT's as we have worked through problems. Kristine Porritt
