No Electronic Theft Act in 1997
The No Electronic Theft Act 1997 is exactly what it sounds like. It is to prevent theft of published electronic ideas. According to Indiana University “The NET Act makes it a federal crime to reproduce, distribute, or share copies of electronically copyrighted works such as songs, movies, games, or software programs, even if the person copying or distributing the material acts without commercial purpose and/or receives no private financial gain” (2012). As you can see, the advances in technology that resulted in new ethical issues necessitating the creation of this act is the ability to use the internet to upload and share files with other users on the internet.
Children’s Internet Protection Act 2000 The Internet is a very large place; some often say you will never be able to find the end. With that being said, there is a lot of explicit and harmful information available to anyone that can use a keyboard. The Children’s Internet Protection Act 2000 was put into place to protect children from this type of information. According to the Federal Communications Commission “The Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) was enacted by Congress in 2000 to address concerns about children’s access to obscene or harmful content over the Internet”. This act was primarily regulated and intended for schools and libraries where children have access to the internet. The advances in technology that resulted in new ethical issues necessitating the creation of this act
