An informational speech on Gatorade.
Water will not replace all the ingredients of sweat. Tonight I will inform you about Gatorade and the benefits of drinking it while exercising. You're probably asking yourself "Why should I care about Gatorade while exercising?" and the answer to that is dehydration. Dehydration is defined as the excessive loss of body fluid. First I will give you a history of Gatorade, 2nd I will tell you what Gatorade is, then I will explain how Gatorade works, and finally I will compare Gatorade against other sports drinks on the market.

Deep in Florida Gator country dehydration was a major problem. The University started to research on an "alternative to water" and Gatorade was created by Dr. Robert Cade and Dr. Dana Shires in 1966 at the University of Florida and named Gatorade after the University's football team, the gators. A year later after Dr. Cade made an agreement with Stokely-Van Camp to market Gatorade, which he already patented. The Florida Gators used it in 1967 for the first time. It was also the first time they won the Orange Bowl title beating Georgia Tech. During an interview with the Georgia Tech head coach a reporter asked why they lost. The head coach replied "Because we did not have Gatorade on our sidelines." In 1969 the Kansas City Chiefs used the sports drink an attribute their Super Bowl victory that year to Gatorade. Only one year after its commercial introduction, Gatorade reformulated its recipe due to the Food and Drug Administration banned Sodium Cyclamate, which is a sweetener, according to Gatorade.com, last accessed on October 9, 2005. The Quaker Oats company bought Stokely Van-Camp in 1983 and licensed marketing rights to Pepsi co. until 2001 when Pepsi Co. bought the Quaker Oats Company, according to wikipedia.com, last accessed on October 9th, 2005. Ever since Gatorade has been marketed using athletes who have testimonials of how the drink has helped them.

Gatorade contains first and foremost water, which you are mainly losing when you perspire. It also includes sucrose and glucose-fructose syrups, citric acid, sodium chloride, sodium citrate, monopotassium phosphate, and flavoring/coloring ingredients. All of these are vital to keeping hydrated while exercising. Gatorade has a 6% carbohydrate solution that helps keep you feeling thirsty until your body is hydrated. The single most important ingredient in Gatorade are the electrolytes. Water contains no electrolytes and cannot help replace electrolytes like sodium and potassium that are lost in sweat. Unlike water, Gatorade contains an optimal amount of carbohydrates and helps to fight muscle failure by providing an ample amount of energy.

Before I tell you how Gatorade works we must first analyze what we lose during exercise. Obviously we sweat but it's the composition of sweat that has led to the Gatorade Sports and Science Institute to do an endless amount of research. Sweat is the body's way of cooling itself down. When we exercise the body's muscles produce a lot of heat and when the body cannot disperse the heat in time we sweat. Sweat is made of mostly water, sodium, potassium, chloride and other trace amounts of minerals. Gatorade's ingredients attempt to counter us losing these important minerals, which are known as electrolytes. It is possible for a person exercising vigorously to lose up to 3 quarts of sweat per hour. Gatorade.com last accessed on October 9th, 2005. That is when dehydration sets in. Dehydration occurs when the body loses too much water. When you stop drinking water or lose large amounts of fluid, your body's cells absorb fluid from the blood and other body tissues. The early symptoms of dehydration include mild cramping and feeling faint, having a dry mouth, and producing dark amber colored urine. As your body becomes more and more dehydrated, more severe cramping will occur and you will not produce any urine, you will get severe muscle cramps and in extreme cases your body could go into shock, according to webmd.com, last accessed on October 10, 2005. There have been many attempts at duplicating Gatorade, none which have had the same success among the world's elite athletes. Gatorades main opponents in the sports drink world are PowerAde made by the Coca Cola Company and All Sport, which Pepsi Co. bought and is no longer made, and various types of fitness water. Energy drinks such as red bull are not considered because they are not considered sports drinks. The problem with PowerAde is that it contains high fructose corn syrup which will have a repetitious effect on the body. PowerAde itself helps to hydrate but in order to break down high fructose corn syrup it requires water. Another ingredient in PowerAde that proves to have no benefit in fighting dehydration is maltodextrin. It is a carbohydrate that does not help replenish the liquid in your body. Fitness water contains a lower amount of electrolytes and do not replenish as well as Gatorade would. Gatorade is clinically proven to replenish, refuel, and rehydrate.

In Conclusion, First I informed you of the history of Gatorade, then I told you what Gatorade was made of, 3rd I told you how Gatorade works, and finally I told you how Gatorade stacks up in comparison to other sports drinks. I hope that my speech has adequately informed you on these aspects of Gatorade and the importance of staying hydrated while exercising.

He had discovered that the athletes of a losing team were weak because of two main things that were not being replaced because of sweat, electrolytes and fluids. (Note 1.) Electrolytes help your brain control your muscles and body fluids, and when the main electrolytes are lost with the sweat, it delays communication. Millions of people drink sports drinks like Gatorade everyday, But very few people actually know what ingredients make up their favorite sports drink. Gatorade was thought up in 1965 by an assistant coach of the Florida Gators at the University of Florida and his team of physicians who wanted to create something to help his players deal with the heat of the Florida sun. They created a concoction they deemed “Gatorade”, named after the team of course. The beverage set out to replenish not only the fluids they lost on the field but the carbohydrates and electrolytes. After they instituted this drink the team began out doing their opponents in the heat and ended the season 7-3, But the question here is not “Does gatorade work?”…

During the summer of 1965, a University of Florida assistant football coach set up a meeting with the university physicians. Most of his players were playing poorly as a result of the heat. Coach wanted them to try and figure out why so many of his players were being affected by heat and heat related illnesses and in result were suffering from dehydration. The doctors soon realized that two key factors were to blame for causing the Gator players to overheat--the fluids and electrolytes lost through sweat were not being replaced, and the large amounts of carbohydrates the players were using for energy were not being replenished. After working in the lab the doctors finally created a carbohydrate-electrolyte beverage that kept the players hydrated and energized to play while in the heat. Hence, the year "GATORade" was born.…

Witty yet brilliant individuals cough up slogans that will inevitably affect many consumers to come. The advertisement that initially captured my attention was the Gatorade Sports Drink Commercial. Being properly hydrated is something that can be the barrier between life and death. I have ran track for eight plus years. Those eight plus years entailed two to three hour practices Monday through Friday and all day track meets on the weekends in the blazing sun. Being a part of this sport for so long has allowed me to work with numerous coaches who have their own methods and hydration beliefs, that they swear are the most effective. Throughout all my years, I have never explicitly been told that I was not able to have water during a workout but I did have a coach who limited our water consumption. He was concerned with athletes cramping up or vomiting because they were running with too much water in their stomachs too close to practice…

This means less oxygen for muscles and the brain, causing a significant loss in cognition and energy. In 2005 Susan Shirreffs analyzed several studies related to athletic performance and hydration. The results of these studies vividly illustrate how dehydration impairs all aspects of athletics. Experiments were conducted that had athletes run for several miles at certain levels of hydration and dehydration. Shirreffs found that with as little as a two percent reduction in body mass due to water loss athletes performed significantly worse as their dehydration continued. Not only did dehydration cause a reduction in athleticism, but it was found motivation to exercise was influenced (2011). This is due to waters affect on endurance and blood flow. Without proper hydration blood flow is slowed and less oxygen is carried throughout the muscles. This causes significant and noticeable pain due to the cramping of muscles and the lessening of joint lubrication. Athletes studied with proper hydration were found to perform at much higher standards and with increased motivation. This means that by drinking water athletic performance can be increased exponentially (Kalman, 2010; Keneflick, 2012). All studies in this article point towards hydration being a critical factor for athletes to perform efficiently. Also, studies were cited that concluded hydration has a…

Hydration affects energy levels and is essential to your workout performance. Why? Proper hydration regulates body temperature and heart rate. In one hour of exercise, you could lose more than a quart (1 L) of water, depending on exercise intensity and air temperature. Without enough water for the body to cool itself through perspiration, you could become dehydrated—you’ll lose energy, and your muscles may cramp.…

    What does Water do?

We as humans need water because Water is essential to good health—and life. Up to 60 percent of an adult’s body weight and about 74 percent of a newborn’s body weight is water, making it the largest single substance in the human body. Water helps carry nutrients to the cells in your body, as well as carry waste products from the cells in your body. Athletes especially need water because water helps regulate body temperature by absorbing heat from your metabolism, as well as help lubricate the joints. Having water is a necessity, however there are complications if we drink too much and too little of it. Drinking too little water is dangerous because it can lead to dehydration. Dehydration can influence your mental functioning, your heart rate, and your ability to regulate body temperature and blood pressure. If you lose even 1 percent of your body weight in water, your physical performance is affected and you feel tired. If you lose 2 to 4 percent, your mental functioning is affected; a loss of more than 10 percent of your body weight is a medical emergency and if not reversed can lead to death. Sweating during exercise that is not compensated by drinking extra fluids; exercise even in cold weather can cause sweating. Hot, humid weather, High altitude, which causes rapid breathing and increased urine output, Illnesses such as poorly controlled diabetes, and illnesses that cause vomiting, diarrhea, or fever, Pregnancy, and Certain medications. Each of these conditions alone can contribute to dehydration; a combination of them can cause it more quickly. Although caffeine does cause you to urinate more frequently, the effect is short-term and does not typically cause dehydration. Both caffeinated and non-caffeinated…
