informative briefing essay
Informative briefing essay
After several days of thinking, I decided my topic for informative briefing. At the beginning I wanted to talk about traditional Chinese food, and then Chinese history, and then the Chinese Zodiac. But finally I chose one child policy as my topic because it has been a controversy topic in China and all over the world. Besides, there has been a recent change in the policy. So I think it will be a good idea to talk about it to my foreign classmates.
During my research, I watched some videos on youtube. I also looked at websites of Chinese government. I realized that I do not really know much about this topic. The more I know, the more questions I have. For example, if a woman is pregnant with a pair of twins, will she be forced to pay the fine?
In the outlines that I wrote before I started preparing for the slides, I wanted to talk about some pros and cons about this policy. But when I finished the slides and started to rehearse, I found that there was not enough time to talk about it. So I adjusted my plan and decided to talk only about why we have one-child policy and what is one-child policy.
I think that I have done well on finding information about this topic. I did a lot of research and made sure I have enough knowledge about the thing that I want to talk about. Besides that, I think that I succeeded in making changes to my speech accordingly. One of the difficulties I found during my preparation is that it is hard to not put personal opinions into the speech, especially when the topic is very closely related to my life. But I managed to solve the problem by not trying to convey any opinions to my audiences. I am only in charge of giving the information and they can make judgments by themselves. It was also very hard to sort out useful points in the huge amount of information.
I would have changed the way that I ended the speech. The beginning seemed good to me because I felt the interest that is raised in my audience as I began the speech. The ending was a little rush. I would have told the last few lines more dramatically. I would have looked at the slides less often.
If I am going to do the persuasive speech on the same topic, I will find more information about this topic, including both the good and bad impacts of this policy. I will talk about how traditional Chinese cultural values influence people’s choices on having babies. I will talk about polices concerning family planning among different countries all over the world.

One reason that the one-child policy was an excellent idea is that the population was decreasing. Document A shows a steady population decline from 1980-2010 this will continue until 2030. Also, the policy has prevented a humongous birth rate and leaves more food and resources for the population (Document E). This evidence supports the claim that the one-child policy is helping China’s…

How exactly does this “One Child Law” control the Chinese population? Forced abortions, yep it’s real a families very own worst nightmare, and it’s only one of the few ways China enforces control on their people. Wait, wait, wait, isn’t abortion illegal? No, it is very legal to get an abortion up to the third trimester in China, since 1953 in fact. One such instance of China’s government officials forcing abortions upon families is the story of Pan Chunyan. In Beijing while grocery shopping, she was grabbed, still eight months pregnant with her third child, by two men who were working for a local official, and locked her up with two other women. Four days later they forced her to put her thumbprint on a document stating that she had agreed to an abortion, a nurse then came in and injected a drug into her. “After I got the shot, all the thugs disappeared. My family was with me again. I cried and hoped that my baby would survive.” Ms. Pan, 31, told a reporter over a telephone interview, from her home in Fujian. However hours after her labor, the baby was born dead on April, 8, “black and blue all over,” Ms. Pan said. Another way to ensure that this law was held to its fullest, were the incentives the Chinese government bestowed upon the couples and families who complied with the law. The incentives varied from higher wages, better…

China is the world’s most populated country with the population of 1.3 billion people. Since there were so many people in China they had to think about a way to control population so this is where the one-child policy was made. It officially restricts married, urban couples to having only one child, while allowing exemptions for several cases, including twins. This policy was introduced in 1978 and initially applied to first-born children from 1979. The policy is enforced at the local level through fines that are imposed based on the income of the family and other factors.…

The first thing that I noticed in my introduction is that I need a better attention grabber. It was good, but there is definitely a better way to get the audience’s attention. The biggest thing in my speech that I noticed the most was the eye contact. I tend to look down at my notecards a lot. I review my speech over and over again before I give it, and almost memorize it, but it is my worst fear to speak in front of people so that is why I look down at my cards so much. Also, I have my cards too close to my face. The second thing that caught my attention while watching myself was that I need to have more gestures with my hands. Having a little bit more mobility with my hands will put more emphasis on the things that I am trying to say to the audience. The power point that I made was simple, but I feel like it got the points across and corresponded with my speech. I thought my tone throughout the speech was good. I feel like my tone of voice is very personable with the audience and not too soft or loud. Another thing that I thought I did well was pausing. I let my information sink in with the audience with a pause. I tend to use a lot of head movement when I’m speaking, and it is distracting to the audience. I used some humor in my speech by giving funny pictures and saying some things in my speech that made the audience laugh. I gave some time to let the humor set in with a pause and then proceeded to go on with my speech, so I thought that I used humor in my speech pretty well. My speech needs to be more conversational. When I watched myself speak, it seemed like I was reading it a little bit. With a more conversational way of speaking, you can attach yourself to the audience rather than reading your speech. Saying that, when I was speaking I was standing with good posture and speaking with a good tone. Even though I may have not been speaking conversationally, I think that my posture made up for it a…

My advice to anyone giving a speech is to stick to the subject and be passionate about what you talk about. Make sure you have plenty of facts as we as personal stories to back your speech up. Relax, breathe and don’t’ talk too fast. People want to know what you are saying and why you are saying it. Make the speech fun yet informing so that the audience doesn’t have time even to think about nodding off. Start strong and end strong, so the audience knows that you’re still just as…
