For a while I was obsessed with beauty products. I read all about the magic of lactic acid peels, but never about using viruses to clean up skin. To explain how that works would involve too much technical language, so let’s just pretend that viruses are trees. In the magical kingdom of Zeal, we exploit the sap of the tree to treat your face spots. We take the actions and capabilities of the sap, or virus, to treat your problems. Upon learning this big tidbit, it became one of the reasons for why I wanted to get involved in this kind of scientific work. Part of my interest in microbes eventually led to me interning at a lab at my local university. Instead of working on viruses and acne, I worked with bacteria and antibiotic resistance. Still learning about the itty bitty squishy parts of life and their weird chemicals is pretty cool. In fact, I wrote and presented a poster at a conference about how bacteria communicate with each other through chemical signals that they make. Pretty cool, right? In my quest for knowledge I have worked from those viruses, to bacteria, and now
