Movies have been around since Thomas Edison’s invention of the Kinetoscope in 1894. The Kinetoscope, or peep show, was a tall, wooden box that allowed a person to look inside and see moving images. Viewing images was made possible by the film moving past a shutter over a light source. The Kinetoscope, however, had a two major flaws: the images viewed were jerky and didn’t move smoothly, and the viewing time for one show was only twenty seconds. Improvements to the Kinetoscope allowed it to hold more film and present at least a full minute of animation. Many early films had the theme of popular culture: dancers, performances, or reenactments of historical events.…

The first animated film with sound was the 1928 Disney film Steamboat Willie. Since then, animated movies have been cranked out due to the admiration they receive from children. Disney is known world wide for their animated films. People love them because of their feel good story lines, astounding use of animation, and largely, the music incorporated into the movies. My generation especially has grown up watching what could arguably be considered “Disney classics” such as Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Lion King.…

Many of you if not all of all you have probably heard of Walt Disney. At this point his name can be found everywhere due to how massive Disney is as a business, and more importantly for this speech, he’s also regarded as one of the most influential people of all time in the animation industry. I bring him up because my speech is to inform you all about the process of hand drawn animation. Sadly it’s impossible to get a recent interview with him since he died back in the 60s, so instead I’ll be drawing upon multiple interviews with various different directors of both shows and movies instead, some famous and others a bit more niche. And also due to the limited amount of main points, I’m not going to be able to cover the entire animation process.…

Walt Disney pioneered the animation standards for many animators since his time. His approach to the making of Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs is very interesting, he doesn't simply dive in drawing frame by frame but rather he divides the animation by the object or thing with movement. Meaning, Disney had multiple separate animations unified under his multiplane camera, capturing a still background and multiple cells painted that were animated separately but successfully creating the illusion with the careful pacing of a single composition.…
