A very good morning to my tutor and fellow classmates. Do yo know what is the hottest topic from june to july? Yes it is the FIFA 2014 World Cup 2014. When you think of world cup, what is the first thing that appears to your mind? Yes, I’m sure it is brazil, england, germany and so on. But all of this are the about the mens world cup. When it comes to the womens world cup, what do you know? Well, today I will be talking about the the FIFA Womens’ World Cup.
First, a brief history about the womens world cup. The tournament was originally the brainchild of the then FIFA president João Havelange. The inaugural tournament was hosted in China in 1991, with twelve teams sent to represent their countries. In 1995 it was also twelve teams but from 1999 onwards, it was increased to 16 teams. The tournament takes place every 4 years and has so far been conducted 6 times. It started in China, then Sweden, then united states hosted it twice, followed by china again and then germany. The next womens world cup will be held next year in canada.
Next I would talk about the format of the tournament. The format and rules of the tournament is no different than the mens world cup. The current final tournament features 16 national teams competing over about three weeks in the host nation. There are two stages: the group stage followed by the knockout stage. n the group stage, teams compete within four groups of four teams each. In the group stage, 16 teams seeded into four groups (A,B,C, and D) compete against each other in a round-robin tournament. After Germany trounced Argentina 11–0 in the opening game of the 2007 World Cup, FIFA president Sepp Blatter conceded that the one-sided match was "not good for the game" and was something that FIFA would consider in deciding whether or not to expand the group phase to 24 teams. On 3 December 2009, FIFA decided to expand the women's World Cup to 24 teams for 2015.
