Like many others, I have a really difficult time holding a conversation with someone when it involves a topic I have absolutely no interest in. I believe the same can be said on an attempt to be informative on a topic in which one cares little about. During my research on our given assignment, I found no topic near or around the date of my birth that had any pertinence or provided any interest to me. I came to the conclusion that I would speak to you all today about something that use to be a passion of mine. Today I would like to speak to you about my time spent in law enforcement.

1. First I think it would be appropriate to explain the purpose and role that the modern police force was set in place to fulfill.
A. Modern policing can trace its roots back to Sir Robert Peel (Minister of Parliament/Home Secretary for United Kingdom). Established Metropolitan Police Force 1829. Police forces since have modeled there agencies after “The Met”.
B. It was a professional police force created to protect the citizenry and maintain order during civil unrest.
C. Today the foundation that Sir Robert Peel laid is what we build all of our agencies atop. The purpose of the police force today is to 1.)Maintain law and order 2.)Protect members of the public and their property 3.)Prevent crime 4.) Reduce the fear of crime 5.) Improve the quality of life for all citizens.
2. Police officers are required to fulfill many different roles within the law enforcement spectrum. I spent my time as a patrol officer.
A. The officers who spend most of their time in the public eye are the patrol officers. They attend road related incidents like vehicle accidents, enforce traffic laws and knock on your door at 2 a.m. to inform you the neighbors don’t appreciate your loud party. Patrol officers conduct patrols in their assigned sectors and provide a visible presence to deter crime. Patrolling is also supposed to provide a sense of reassurance to the community.
