But many related risk factors have been identified that increase your chances of getting affected by oral cancer. Some of these include:
1. Smoking: Cigarette smoking increases the risk of having oral cancer many fold. Even pipe and cigar smoking can lead to cancer. Several studies have highlighted the association between smoking and cancer. The risk increases with the number of cigarettes smoked over a period of time. This is due to the large number of carcinogens present in the tobacco smoke. Risk decreases with the cessation of smoking.
2. Alcohol: Alcohol consumption is another factor that greatly increases your risk factor. Most of the cases diagnosed with oral cancer have a history of excessive alcohol consumption.
3. Chewing tobacco, betel quid and other such substances can also lead to cancerous conditions.
Myth: Oral cancer cannot cause death
Fact: Oral cancer may be less aggressive than other types of cancers in terms of spreading but it has a high fatality rate more than that of cervical
