Informative Speech: The Slaughter Of American Horses
The Slaughter of American Horses
Specific Purpose Statement: To inform my audience about the inhumane slaughter of our American horses for the purpose of meat consumption.
Central Idea: Each year, thousands of our American horses gets shipped across the border and slaughtered for their meat.

Introduction A. Attention: “History was written on the back of the horse”…. “The dog may be Man’s best friend, but it was the horse that built civilization.” B. Relate to the Audience: Horse meat is considered a delicacy in many countries. If you plan on traveling or living out of country, you may encounter a horse on your dinner plate. C. Est. Processes of slaughter a. The horses are bought from an auction by a kill buyer and transported 30+ hours to a slaughterhouse. b. They are beaten and prodded into a knock box (pen that holds a horse for killing) c. They are bashed in the skull with a mechanical hammer, known as captive bolt. d. Canada shoots them with a rifle e. Mexico stabs them to death with tiny knives (the outpour of blood makes the meat more flavorful) f. Hung up by one hoof, throat slit, left to bleed out (most of them still conscious) g. Skinned (while still alive) to help with the bleeding process
(TRANSITION: Horse slaughter is NOT ILLIGAL in the United State, and here is the reason why: It’s all about the politics.)
II. Problems a. Slaughterhouses places an enormous burden on the city’s environmental infrastructure b. Water treatment facility become overwhelmed and unable to process the amounts of blood from the slaughtered horses, which is full of antibiotics c. According to statistics, the desensitizing of workers being exposed to horse slaughter leads to increased crime rates. Kaufman’s crime rate decreased 35% within one year of the plant

    First off, horse slaughter affects the economy in both positive and negative ways, but what is happening now? When horse slaughter is legalized, there is a higher horse market due to meat buyer’s competition. Horses sold at auction are sold to the highest bidder, of which a meat buyer will gladly bid up a buyer until they are paying an unruly amount. This is good for the market, but bad for the buyer.
