Topic: Teen Pregnancy
General Purpose: To Inform
Specific Purpose: My audience will gain the knowledge of how teen pregnancy shows teenagers how the real world is.
Thesis Statement: Teen pregnancy changes the lives of many teenagers in different ways such as: their education, financial status, social life, and relationships.
Introduction
Teen Pregnancy has been going on for a long time. A way you can define teen pregnancy is an adolescent child (under 18 and way beyond their maturity level) getting pregnant when they are not ready to. Teen pregnancy has been slowly rising each year for the past ten years. It is not just a problem that the adolescent child is getting pregnant, the problem involves in their high school education, their financial needs, their peer to peer life, and relationships with boys. From the moment a teenager finds out they are pregnant, their whole lives change. They have to give up a lot of things to sacrifice for their child. Teen pregnancy is a very difficult for the adolescent children to go through.

I. Teen Pregnancy changes the lives of many teenagers in different ways such as their education, financial status, social life, and relationships.

A. A teenagers ' education is one of the most important things for them to focus on so they can graduate from high school, but with a baby it is a lot more difficult. 1. When a teenager first becomes pregnant, it can affect their high school education by being sick the first trimester of pregnancy. a. According to Facts for Families, written in 2004, “Babies born in the U.S. to teenage mothers are at risk for long-term problems in many major areas of life including school failure.” b. A lot of teens miss a lot of school and fall behind in their classes, and end up having to take them over the next year. c. Pregnancy is hard for a teenager to go through, but they have to stick with school so they can graduate at the right time they should. 2. A teenager has a lot of financial problems after they get pregnant because they have to support their child and their self. a. Most teenagers that don’t have a lot of money in their household have many problems trying to support their babies. b. A lot of teen moms end up looking into adoption because they can’t afford to take care of their child. c. According to the book Teen Pregnancy written in 2003, “There are more problems with lower class teenagers having children because of their lack of medicare.” d. M.G.’s article on Why Pregnancy is A Poverty Problem states, “When a child is born to a poor teenage mother, the child is much more likely to grow up in poverty herself and continue the cycle as an adult.” 3. Once a teen gets pregnant, their social life and relationships totally change. a. According to www.msss.gouv, “Young men often do not want to be involved or recognize their role as parent.” b. A pregnant teen eventually loses her social life and relationships because no one in high school wants to have the responsibility of a newborn baby. c. High school teenagers want to have fun! They don’t want to hang out with babies!
Transition: Now that I have discussed the main point effects on teen mothers, I will now talk about the feelings a pregnant teen has along her surroundings. B. One of the most difficult things to go through when a teenager finds out she is going to have a baby, feelings between herself, family, and peers change. 1. A teenager’s feelings commonly become frightened, scared, and hopeless due to the startled of an unplanned pregnancy. a. Many, particularly younger teens, keep the news of their pregnancies secret because they fear the anger and disappointment of their parents. b. A lot of teenagers also keep their pregnancy a secret to keep stress away from everyone gossiping about the teen. c. Most teens are scared because of their lives changing to become mothers so early. 2. If you have just learned that your teen is having a baby, you 're probably experiencing a wide range of emotions, from shock and disappointment to grief and worry about the future. a. Some parents feel a sense of guilt, thinking that if only they 'd done more to protect their child this wouldn 't have happened. b. According to kidshealth.org, “Recognize your feelings and work through them so that you can accept and support her.” c. A lot of parents may make their pregnant teen go to work to teach them responsibility. 3. The most difficult feelings to gain knowledge about is your peers around you because your reputation as a person turns negative. a. Your peers include your boyfriend (baby’s daddy) which occasionally disappears before the baby is born. b. A teen that is pregnant is usually treated differently by being called names and getting made fun of. c. Normally, a pregnant teenager loses a lot of friends because of being pregnant and being tied down with a child.
Transition: Now the I have discussed the hard feelings on a pregnant teen and the people around her, I will now talk about the actions that is taken place once a teenager gives birth to their first child. C. Once a child is born, a whole new world begins for a teenager. She has the responsibility of a fully grown, mature woman. Her life, hobbies, and daily routines will be completely transformed. 1. A teen mom will not get to go out and have fun with their friends near as much once they have their child because they have to take care of them. a. According to teenmom.com, “A lot of girls have to give up their teenage life and start as an adult. When their friends call to go out, the teen mom cannot leave due to their new responsibility.” b. Giving up your teenage years to have a child take a lot. That is why most teenage fathers’ leave their pregnant girlfriend’s so they can live their life the way they want to. c. Some teen mom’s will leave their child home with their mother (the child’s grandmother) to do what they did before they got pregnant. PARTY! 2. Teenage mother’s cannot just sit and home and watch TV or talk on the phone all the time. They have a 24/7 job of taking care of a baby! a. A teenager has the new responsibility now of changing diapers, cleaning bottles, feeding their baby, and more. b. There is no time for a telephone conversation when you have a baby, when one of your friends call, you might as well tell them they can come over and help because a teen mom needs all the help she can get. c. According to teenparenting.org, “It is very hard from going and doing nothing into taking care of a baby all the time, but once a teen mom gets used to it, she will be like all other moms.” 3. A teen mom mostly gets help from her mother so they can finish school, or go to work to support their baby. a. A baby has the key to all their grandmother’s hearts’. A teen’s mother usually will help them the best they can to help take care of their child. b. Most teen mom’s mother’s want to take over custody of the baby until their own child can grow up and get on their feet. c. According to parenting.com, “A mother will help their child only if they want to help themselves and their child.”

Conclusion: In conclusion, a pregnant teenager will always face challenges that they have to be strong to go through. Unplanned pregnancies do not always go well, but a new parent has to gain responsibility and own up to being prepared for a baby. Unplanned pregnancies end up working out some way, but would be best if a teenager would have been ready for a baby. Overall, a teenager learns a lot about themselves and the responsibility of becoming a parent is very hard and difficult, but it is something that some teens have to go through if they choose to not be responsible when having intimate relations.
