In the story “So I Ain’t No Good Girl” Written by Sharon Flake, I felt that the story could use way more conflict and feeling to it. It should make me feel the way the characters feel. So in the story they are going to school so they are waiting for the bus in a bus stop next to a donut shop. As they wait there is conflict between the girl and the other “good” girls the conflict was good but I wanted to feel how the girl felt towards the other good girls. “Any fool can know; the point is to understand” (Albert Einstein). This wise saying is from Albert Einstein, who believed understanding a concept is the most crucial part of knowledge. Elizabeth Kolbert displayed a similar philosophy in writing her passage “Terrible Teens”. Kolbert’s objective was to make her readers truly comprehend her thesis. Making use of personal encounters, Kolbert was able to make her thesis clear throughout her passage. Furthermore, Kolbert uses a comparison to a well-known musical to make her theory straightforward. Last of all, Kolbert uses a professional’s opinion to further propel her proposition as unambiguous. Kolbert not only uses methods of development throughout her passage…
There is a lot that we can learn from people who have experienced history. Bella Spewack, specifically, is a great example of the struggle immigrants endured while trying to survive in America after immigration. Today, it is beneficial to learn about the personal views of people who lived in the past so we can gain a better understanding of how communities today were developed. Reading “Streets”, you can understand what the post immigration life was like in New York in the early years of Bella’s life. Bella included a lot of details in her memoir that allows the reader to understand how difficult life was for an immigrant. Even though “Streets” was written from the perspective of Bella, we can still rely on her opinions to give us an understanding of the difficulty immigrants faced while starting a new life.…

Amy Chua, from the very beginning dives into her thesis, which she argues from the introduction continued all through part one of “ Day of Empire” and without a doubt, throughout the entire book. Chua’s clear, distinctive thesis can be condensed into two main points. To begin with, she explains how for every society that has been allowed to be called a hyperpower have been – at the time, considered to be “tolerant”. In every instance to achieve supremacy, every hyperpower had to enclose a certain quantity of tolerance, the extent of freedom that an individual has to prosper in all aspects of their life, ranging from religious, cultural, linguistic, to conversing with people of different upbringings. Tolerance is suggested as the prerequisite for global domination. However, conversely she also indicates that intolerance has been shown as the reason for the downfall of a hyperpower or a result of the demise. The second concept she introduces in her thesis is the idea of a great nation to become a hyperpower, they must have “glue” that binds, and embraces them together. Critics argue that modern America is in the first stages of losing its identity, with nonchalant laws of immigration, granting just about every immigrant into the states. Chua acknowledges to some degree that, hyperpowers that have fallen as a causality of lost identity, however this reverts back to her first notion. When the population succumbs to disjunction, it’s most likely the repercussion of intolerance within the nation. In the case on point, America’s “glue” problem lies outside of its borders. America is seen across the world as an icon, however it does nothing to enforce its image or bring together the other nations that follow in its footsteps. Amy Chua’s thesis from the get-go helps to depict the tone, and attitude of the rest of this…

I chose the quote,"You cannot open a book without learning something" by the Irish proverb because I can relate it to my favorite book,"The Outsiders" by S.E. Hinton which taught me lots of stuff that I did not know about. The book is about a 14 year old named Ponyboy and his two brothers Darry who is 16 and Sodapop who is 20 years old. Darry is in charge of them due to both of his parents dying in a car accident. They are all greasers in a gang and often watch over Johnny ,who is another greaser, because his alcoholic parents abuse him. They also have a gang rivalry with the Socs who are rich and pick on the poor.…

Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire investigates the power of externally driven and social influences upon the expectations and manifestations of relationships. Williams criticises social inequality and division between those who support the ‘old money’ and those in the ideals of the ‘American Dream’. He critiques the projected impressions that they create, surrounding the differing life expectations and the subsequent disconnect between members of the classes. In turn, his drama also examines the enormous impact of internal influences such as mental illness upon the construction and preservation of successful relationships, echoing the need for support and honesty in dealings with others.…
