Innocence: The Murder Of Jane Elizabeth White
Innocence. What was innocence? Innocence is described as the lack of guilt or corruption; purity. Jane Elizabeth White was the definition innocence. Ivry knew this. She knew without a doubt that her friend was innocent, but as she stood there, staring at the limp body swinging back and forth, back and forth almost rhythmically, she couldn't help but question whether or not she missed something. Everyone else was absolutely sure that Jane was guilty. The immense evidence stacked against her was hard to forget, and they did find the branding iron —black pentagrams were gruesomely branded into all of the dead victims— in her possession, but something about the case seemed… off. “It’s a real shame.” Ivry jumped as the person next to her spoke, …show more content…
Gabriel was the first victim. They found his five-year-old body lying on the side of the road by the clock tower, with a black pentagram branded into his arm. He had been tortured to death. Many others soon followed. They were all killed in different ways. Some were drowned, some were hung, others were brutally stabbed. They were all different. The only thing that linked these cases together was the midnight black pentagram branded into the corpse’s shoulder. Jane’s mother disappeared three months after Gabriel’s death. Jane, like any sensible person, had gone to the police, but they said that there wasn’t much they could do for her. In Salem, people went missing all the …show more content…
She didn’t know her very well, but still wanted to help. Jane needed a friend, so Ivry volunteered. She had convinced her parents to let her stay at their house while the pain healed. Ivry had finally seen Jane smile, for the very first time since her mother’s disappearance, when the police showed up at their door. They had found Jane’s mother. Jane smiled, a real, actual, smile. Hope swam across her face as she, for a short time, had her mother back. It lasted for about five seconds before she realized that the police weren’t smiling with her. “S-She’s not…” her voice trailed of as realization struck her like a crashing boulder. “Oh… Oh God… no…” “There’s… more miss. We would like to ask you a few questions regarding her death. Would you please come with us?”
“W-wait… y-you d-don’t a-actually…” Jane started backing towards the wall.
“Would you happen to know why these were found in your house?” one of the officers reached into his bag and pulled out two pentagrams. One in the shape of a branding iron, and the other was on a pendant with a blood red ruby in the center.
“W-why w-would you… I would never... H-how… How c-could… HOW COULD YOU EVEN CONCEIVE THE FACT THAT I WOULD KILL MY OWN

Named after the holy city of Jerusalem, Salem was founded in 1626 by English merchants who took advantage of the natural harbor and the abundant fishing the area provided. Fear of Devil-worship and witchcraft swept through Salem, Massachusetts, like a plague. During the years of 1692-1693, more than 200 people, men, women, and even children, were accused of witchcraft. Words of friends, neighbors, and even complete strangers put many people’s lives in danger; 19 were hung, 1 pressed to death, and 3 including 1 infant died in jail awaiting trial.
