Insane Macbeth
An insane person is one that demonstrates foolish acts because of their poor mental state. In the beginning of Macbeth, Macbeth is characterized as a brave soldier. His bravery on the battlefield earned him the titles of Thane of Cawdor and Glamis. The play leads the reader to believe that Macbeth is sane, but when he receives prophesy from the witches that he will be king, an insane character emerges from within. Macbeth demonstrates these characteristics when he claims to see a floating dagger and an illusionary ghost and also becomes obsessed with the idea of killing others, and not being completely human. Macbeth displays the characteristics of an insane character because of his foolish acts and poor mental state when he visualizes the floating dagger, speaks to a ghost, becomes obsessed with killing others and with the idea of being invincible.

When Macbeth begins talking to a ghost, his insanity becomes very apparent to the reader. From another one of the witches prophesies, Macbeth is threatened by Banquo because his sons are to be king one day as well. Macbeth begins to see Banquo's and makes foolish comments. He says, "[Macbeth] The table's full… [Lennox] Here is a place reserved sir. [Macbeth] Where? [Ross] Gentlemen, rise, his Highness is not well." (3:4:47-49,53) In this quote Macbeth demonstrates his insanity because he thinks that the table is full and does not realize that the ghost he sees is invisible to the other sane people in the room. The others notice that Macbeth is insane as well because Ross even suggests that he is not well. Macbeth also appears to be insane when he tries to talk to the ghost. Macbeth says "[To the ghost] Avaunt! And quit my sight! Let the earth hide thee!" (3:4:93-94) Here, Macbeth is talking to the ghost and looks foolish because no one else can see the ghost and he appears to be talking to nothing. His mind is in poor state because the death of Banquo is on his conscience as well as the chance of being revealed. His

We are first presented with a disturbed mind in Act 1 Scene 3, where Macbeth’s first words echo the witches - “fair is foul and foul is fair”. If we look closely at this it tells us that things are not always what they seem which can really indicate a disturbed mind because somebody could be disturbed and we couldn’t know because we as people cannot look into somebody’s mind. Another example is when Banquo makes a note on Macbeth’s reaction to the three witches – “he seems rapt with awe” this suggests that Macbeth was in a trance like state which really indicates a disturbed mind because his mind is not where it should be. It also makes us question whether the witches have awakened a hope that Macbeth had always had? Macbeth also shows a very hostile and aggressive response to the witches – “Speak, I charge you” this indicates a disturbed mind because it is in contrast to Banquo who is very calm about the witches.…

Macbeth is so disoriented at one point he says “I have thee not, and yet I see thee still. Art thou not, fatal vision, sensible To feeling as to sight? Or art thou but A dagger of the mind, a false creation, Proceeding from the heat-oppressèd brain?” (II.i.33-40). Macbeth will come up with a “fatal vision” when he us under stress of doing an action he does not want to do. Macbeth hallucinates events and believes that they are actually taking place. Macbeth saw the floating dagger on his way to murder king Duncan but during the murder he saw a series of events that didn’t happen. Macbeth hallucinates that “Nature seems dead, and wicked dreams abuse The curtained sleep. Witchcraft celebrates Pale Hecate’s offerings, and withered murder, Alarumed by his sentinel, the wolf, Whose howl’s his watch, thus with his stealthy pace, With Tarquin’s ravishing strides, towards his design Moves like a ghost” (II.i.51-57). Since Macbeth seems dead in the brain that is reflecting that to the real world and causing him to animals and witchcraft. Macbeth is not healthy and is dangerous because him thinking that witchcraft is real and animals are in the room is the first step to doing really dangerous actions. Schizophrenia causes Macbeth to hallucinate about animals and floating daggers while he is murdering King Duncan and starts him to do more evil actions. Schizophrenia also causes Macbeth to act crazy and the dinner banquet and his friends start to…

“Is this a dagger which I see before me,/the handle toward my hand? Come, let me clutch thee./ I have thee not, and yet I see thee still.”(Act 2.1) The dagger isn’t really there and it seemingly guides him to Duncan’s bedside where he promptly stabs him, From then on out Macbeth falls more and more into paranoia thinking everybody is out to get him, this paranoia leads him to distrust his right hand man and through fear has him killed, while Fleance had escaped unintendedly. After killing Banquo his delusions get worse to the point where he sees and yells at his ghost at dinner and his wife plays it off as him being sick. “Here had we now our country’s honour roof’d,/Were the graced person of…

He goes visit with the witches and the first apparitions came in the form of a armed head. The armed head symbolizes how brave of a warrior he was and his fall from being King. They tell him that he needs to fear Macduff because he will defeat him. But of course Macbeth doesn’t listen, he just basically does his own thing. So then all of a sudden a second apparition comes and this time it’s a bloody child, which symbolizes all the faultless people he has gotten rid of. The bloody child tells him anyone who is born of a woman will never defeat him. "Macbeth! Macbeth! Macbeth! beware Macduff; Beware the thane of Fife. Dismiss me. Enough" (Shakespeare 395). "Be bloody, bold, and resolute; laugh to scorn The power of man, for none of woman born Shall harm Macbeth" (Shakespeare 395).So as you can tell they are making Macbeth feel like he's undefeatable. The fourth example is the 3 apparition and the eight kings. The last one comes as a crowned child and tree, it was to show him his defeat. So he's still talking to them asking them for more information and the child tells him that he shouldn’t worry until the trees start coming up the hill to his castle. So he doesn't worry about anything. Later in the play his people start bringing him letters from Macduff but he just tells them to throw the letters away because he believes what the witches were telling him. The final vision Macbeth sees is the mirror with the 8 kings and Banquo's…

In William Shakespeare’s Macbeth the main theme of loyalty is explored throughout the play by main characters. Loyalty can be defined as faithfulness or unwavering devotion to a person or cause. Duncan, Banquo, Macduff and Macbeth are all essential characters who are given opportunities to express their loyalty, however it is the different ways in which these characters choose to be loyal or disloyal that shape the play as a whole. It is the character’s loyalty and/or disloyalty that construct the course of the play. The theme of loyalty interrelates the over arching themes of guilt and masculinity throughout the play.…

Macbeth is introduced in the play as a strong fighter on the battle field but shortly after turns into a soldier that is easily considered to be weak. When Macbeth is on the battlefield fighting against Norway he gains respect as a soldier because he shows qualities of a leader. “For brave Macbeth—well he deserves that name—Disdaining fortune, with his brandished steel, Which smoked with bloody execution, Like valor’s minion carved out his passage Till he faced the slave; Which ne'er shook hands, nor bade farewell to him, Till he unseamed him from the nave to th' chops, And fixed his head upon our battlements.(Shakespeare, Line 16).” In The beginning of the play it is easy to see how Macbeth could be seen as respectable, strong soldier because on the battlefield he fought hard and killed a lot of people. He put his life out for his king and his country and anyone who risks their own life for someone or something else demonstrates deep care. The play progresses when Macbeth is told by three witched that he could not be killed by someone who was born from a women which leads Macbeth to let his guard down from everyone, inferring that no man can kill him. Macbeth is shocked to find that Macduff is ripped out of his mother’s womb and is defeated by this information. “Accursèd be that tongue that tells me so, For it hath cowed my better part of man! And be these juggling fiends no more believed, that palter with us in a double sense, that keep the word of promise to our ear, And break it to our hope. I’ll not fight with thee (Line 17).” Because Macbeth’s ego got in the way of his values as a soldier, It led him to become weak to an opponent, who before it would have been easy to kill. The witches prophecies allowed him to trust that he would never be harmed by someone women born, not allowing him to accept the technicalities that not everyone was born through natural labor. From Beginning to End, Macbeth’s ambition allowed his strength as a soldier to weaken.…
