Insecurities In The Gift Of The Magi
Across the world, many people struggle with insecurities, of their money and love, taking over their lives. In the wonderful story “The Gift of the Magi” By O’Henry, Della, the thoughtful main character, is struggling with these same issues, but she then learns that love can be shown in many different ways. She learns this as she is trying to find a gift good enough for her husband, Jim. Throughout the story, Della shows many signs of her insecurities, but in the end she learns that there is no need to be insecure about her life. Also, Della sincerely learns that, “Love can be expressed in many ways, but we just need to have faith,” And although that is a quote that not many of us have heard I believe that it is something that incases what Della acquired. Della learns not to let her insecurities take over her life and that she will always have someone that loves her even in the worst situations. I used to think that “The Gift of the Magi”, was a story about a couple that included an extremely dramatic girl who is insecure about everything, but now I know that it is actually about issues that people face in their everyday lives. Also, that it is about how people can face or solve their issues with the help of people they love. Even though, throughout parts of the story, Della’s life could be an example of the quote, “Sometimes our thoughts are backed up by so much insecurity, that they create the lies we believe,” In the end she truly learns that because of all of her bad experiences she has been through she has been shaped into the person she is today so she doesn't need to be insecure. Lastly, she started to change a little by being comforted and hearing and realizing that

Money has no influence in “The Gift of the Magi,” it is only an object that represents true love, money is used to display love for somebody else, rather than a love for self. Paul was greedy for the betterment of himself which caused the voices and situations to get worse, while Jim and Della used the emotions of greed for the betterment of their marriage. This is no accident, proving that the physical presence of money has no influence over the situation at all in either case, rather the situation is impacted by who has the money and their intentions. If money was the only common denominator than both stories would have ended the same, considering they did not makes one conclude that money can never be a…

The irony in 'The Necklace' becomes apparent as the very item that had brought Mathilde's dream of 'high living' to life was her and her husband's eventual downfall. Mathilde loses the 'diamond' necklace which she borrowed from her friend and the couple are forced to work for ten years to pay in full the debt they developed after buying a replacement. As it is revealed in the end by Mathilde's friend (from whom she borrowed the necklace) it was actually made of a paste, a cheap substance that has the luster of diamond. In 'The Gift of the Magi', Della forgoes her most prized possession, her long hair, in order to buy her husband, Jim, a Christmas present, a chain to accompany his gold watch which is purpoted that even King Solomon would be jealous of. "The gift of the Magi" by O. Henry and the Sesame Street video have numerous similarities and differences. By comparison, all four people made a sacrifice in order to get the other a Christmas gift. Although the gifts were very different, they were all extremely meaningful to the other. Both stories are very similar in the way they got the gifts. For example, Della didn't have enough money for the watch fob she wanted to get Jim so she cut and sold her hair. While this was happening, Jim was selling his watch to get combs for Della's beautiful hair. As in the video, Bert exchanged his paper clip collection for a soap dish for Ernie's rubber duck. At the same time, Ernie was trading his rubber duck in for a box for Bert to store his paper…

In the short story, “The Gift of the Magi”, O. Henry uses literary devices to show us that love and sacrifice are powerful human emotions, that cannot be outstripped by material possessions. In the story, the author uses many quotes to express symbolism to help reiterate the theme, one of the quotes is, “of all who give and receive gifts, such as they are the wisest. Everywhere they are the wisest. They are the Magi” (O Henry 185-186). This quote applies to the theme, because it helps to relate their decision (to sacrifice and give) as the wisest people, as it shows that their selfless and that they’re merrily sacrificing possessions they are fond of for each other, whom they love. The author uses many literary devices to emphasise the theme,…
