On the ship that Ha was leaving Vietnam on there were lots of other people and Ha is a bit stubborn, not quite like the other girls. “Other girls must be made of bamboo, bending whichever way they are told” (Lai,73). This quote shows that Ha is not as flexible with things like other girls her age, Ha does not adapt well to new things. When they ended up in Florida they needed someone to sponsor them so they came across a ‘cowboy’ who was looking for someone who could work for him, he needs someone who good at engineering, so brother Quang impresses him and gets the job, but the cowboy ends up sponsoring the whole family after hearing Mother's story. When they were finally able to find a home they had some trouble with the cowboy's wife. “ One look at our cowboy’s wife, arms, lips, eyes contorted into knots, and we repack.” (Lai,115). They see that his wife does not want them to be in her home. She was expecting her husband to bring home just one person, not expecting a single mom a young girl and three boys, most not knowing English or very little. This article has a lot of relation to Ha’s story, by using the universal refugee experience. “Food and water are provided, but they are rationed.” (para,7). This shows that while Ha was on the boat their food was rationed, just the same as other refugees, again relating back to the universal refugee experience. No matter where refugees are in the world they will have a lot of the same or very similar experiences.
