Inside Out & Back Again by Thanhhai Lai is a story told in verse that reads like the diary of a ten-year-old girl. It is the story of a year in life of Kim Hà. Hà lives in Saigon with her mother and three brothers. Her father has been missing for nine years, and the family is uncertain if he will make his way back to them. Hà loves her life in Vietnam; she loves the food, the market, going to school with her friends, and watching her papaya tree grow. But the Vietnam War and the Fall of Saigon forces Hà and her family to flee Saigon and endure a long, crowded boat ride to America.
