Situation Analysis

The Product: Cup Noodles (the current name of product/known as Cup O’ Noodles until 1993) is a brand of instant ramen noodles, manufactured and distributed by Nissin Foods Products Company, Ltd of Japan. Typically packaged in foam, hard plastic or paper, the precooked block of noodles only need the addition of hot water to return them to their delicious and edible form.
Background Information:
Momofuku Ando, following his establishment and introduction of Nissin Food Products Company, Ltd. of Japan, invented instant noodles in 1958. That same year, Momofuku Ando introduced Chikin Ramen (Chicken Ramen) to Japan as the first ever instant ramen noodle. Following its immediate success in Japan, Nissin Food Products Company, Ltd. established a subsidiary by the name of Nissin Foods (USA) Company, Incorporated in 1970. Located in Gardena, California, Nissin hoped to recreate the success they achieved in Japan by introducing instant ramen noodles to American consumers. One year later, Nissin decided to further their hold on the instant noodle market by revolutionizing the industry with their one-of-a-kind packaging. In 1971 Nissin Food Products Company, Ltd. invented their now famous Cup Noodle making it possible to package, prepare and serve the instant noodles in one container. Nissin’s development of Cup Noodle, along with its all-in-one packaging, allowed for the inclusion of adding vegetables and meat products to their range of instant ramen noodles. In 1972 Nissin produced Top Ramen in the United States and its popularity led to the production and selling of the brand’s Cup O’ Noodles the following year. By 1977, Nissin’s instant noodle products were popular enough to help open up a new Nissin Foods facility in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. 1978 saw Nissin Foods offer new flavors and varieties in both the Top Ramen and Cup Noodles product lines.
Similarly, Nissin introduced spicy offerings of their

McDonald’s began in 1954 in Los Angeles where it was known as just a cheap, clean, burger joint. Ray Kroc who was a salesperson wanted to expand this concept and signed a contract with the owners (Koetse, 2012). In 1971, McDonalds made its way to Japan where it began to introduce western fast food. Some of the challenges that they faced were the menu items, which rice was not offered as part of the menu (Koetse, 2012). The taste of the food was not of tradition for the Japanese and was considered a snack rather than a meal. The “table manners at McDonald’s “was not of Japanese tradition. At McDonald’s people ate while standing instead of tradition of everyone sitting and eating together with chopsticks and not their hands. Sharing meals in the Japanese culture is a big part of their tradition as it brings a sense of togetherness. Hamburgers, bread and fries are hard items to share among a family (Koetse, 2012).…
